Okay so last sunday morning I was heading to church like always. I was dressed up and everything but it was raining so i was already kinda ticked off that because my suit was getting wet while going to my car. anywayz driving towards the exit to I-85 (GA) i was driving normal pace on that road which leads to the off ramp at around 30 mph because i was close to the off ramp as is. so there was no traffic so i just went slowly to turn right so i went in with no braking which is okay (i thought) since you know...i'm in a rx8...but i kinda forgot my tires are kinda low on grip...and so i'm turning (in rain) and next thing i know my car is sideways which is perfectly fine for me since drifting is one of my favorite hobbies (i only wish i can go with my rx8 instead of my cousins AE86) so i had no problem just countersteering out of it but then i realized that if my tires are already sliding this much in just a little rain i figured its time for new tires. now the real question is what kinda...

Currently i'm running 225/45/18's Toyo Proxies-4 i'm thinking of getting Yokohama AVes100 (i think thats the right one) any input about these tires would be appreciated. I've read good reviews on a few sites, anyone running these? I want Advan Neova's but they're kinda pricy and i'll buy them once my warranty is done and i can start some motorsports with my car, so i'm looking for good street tires. any help or opinions is appreciated =)

I have yokohama avs es100 and LOVE THEM. you can feel the road so much better. Unlike the potenzas I had, you can tell if they are going to brake loose. I can take turns in the rain no problem with them, and they look great. I would definitly reccomend them. The overall grip may be slightly less but they are much more predictable, cheaper, longer tread life, wider, and better looking tires(when compared to potenzas)

 

Check out tirerack.com. Also look at a couple Falkens mentioned in the tire forum that tirerack doesn't carry.

 

Also check out Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3. Great reviews on Tirerack.com for both dry and wet conditions.

I'd choose the Bridgestone price no object. Unfortunately it is for me, so I chose the Kumho as a good choice for daily driver tire. Very good grip with very good wet traction and longevity and comfort/quietness.

 

Ditto-I've got 29k on mine and they still kick ***. I wrote a bunch about them when I got them, so I won't restate it all here. And moving this to the Wheels and Tires forum.

 

+1 for the Yokohama AVS ES 100's I just got mine installed about 1.5 weeks ago and LOVE them. Pretty cheap as well for the good performance you get.

 

I was in that rainstorm last Sun Morn on I-85 right thru downtown.

First rain on my new 245/40/18 Toyo T1R's. Really liking them - and had plenty o grip. Weren't fully broken in, but went to an empty wet parking lot in the drizzle and played slalom for a while. Not really pushing it, but never felt the least bit of slip.

 

I have the Falken FK 452's 245/40-18 and I love them. Now it doesn't rain much down here in AZ. But when it does I like the way they feel. I have done some had cornering and not lost traction. And in the dry they stick real nice when they're warm.

 

i'm running 225/45/18 and on stock rims, do you guys who have wider tires are they still stock rims? or can you fit wider tires on the stock rims? and if they do fit is it possible to recalculate the ecu or something to make sure that the odometer and spedometer is still accurate?

 

245 is the widest you can go on the stock rims. There is no need to recalibrate the speedometer because it is such a small increase that your speedometer will only by off by like a .9 of a mph.

 

KRN - check the thread in the Ga site for buying tires. Lots of good info in there - as I mentioned I went thru this a couple weeks ago and got a lot of responses on lots of tire types in different price ranges. Toyo, Kuhmo, Goodyear, Falken, BFG all mentioned. With all the tracking, some of the guys have been thru several diff types.

As for the size - they also recommended a trusted shop for the work and alignment who told me no prob on the 245's. And I backed that up by checking with the guy who does all the race setups, mod work, basic maint for a lot of us. His shop sponsors the local site.
