Tire weights vs. size

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there sort of a way to calculate difference in tire weight depending on its size? Obviously I'd weigh em all if I had them all...but I'm in the market for new tires, and wondering are there big differences in weight between brands given the same tire size?

i'm not trying to save money or anything, i want the best tire for my purposes, just curiuos on how much weight is a factor.

i.e., how much more would a 19'' tire weight than a 18. Obviously width has a lot to do with the equation, but does anyoen know based on their experience a rough, estimate of how much more a tire weights increase when factored in with either diamter or width?

thanks, and again, if this has been covered elsewhere I must have missed it and sorry.

it's not just the tire, *in general and all else being equal* 19" rims weigh more 18" rims

that's not to say you can't find a 19" rim that's lighter than some other 18" rim, just that the lightest 19" rim will weigh more than the lightest 18" rim, it will also likely have a higher moment of inertia

most of this doesn't mean much on a 3000lb street car though, don't take yourself too seriously

uh, im not, thats why im asking. Im not talking about rims either.

just wondering if in 'general' for those tire brands that dont lists weights for their tires, i could use some simple "fake" forumala to guestimate a diff in weight in say a 225 vs. a 245 tire.

for the most part, i can figure it out, and it sounds like it doesn't matter, but just wanted thoughs thats all, thanks for those that have helped.

assuming same tire diameter, 245's usually weigh about 1lb more than its 225 equivalent.

Yep, like most said... Just remember that some tire lines weigh less than others "just because." For instance, Pirelli Pzero Rossos weigh less than the same size Bridgestone RE040 by a few pounds. So in this case a 245 Rosso, would weigh less than a 225 RE040.

Apples to apples, the same tire line might weigh more if it's wider, but it could also weigh the same. You just have to check. In addition to Edge Racing, Tire Rack also lists the weights of the tires they sell.

thanks, yeah, in a nutshell my question was jsut basically should i worry about cross shopping in terms of weight given same diameter and size...

thanks for the info !

Tires are one of those things you should ignore details like weight. Worry about the tires performance. The weight of the tire is just the result of many compromises in the design and construction and is of minor importance compared to construction, tread design, compound. Pick the best PERFORMING tire based on actual intended usage and don't have a cow about weight. What is most important: ride quality, tread wear life, dry grip, wet grip, temperature range, snow performance, cost. Note of all those only ride quality could have any significant relevance and that is secondary to construction. Unless you want to be in a internet bragging contest about my tire is lighter than yours. IMO
