Purchased an alternative to the OEM Mazda iPod adaptor

I went this past Friday to get my 7500 mile service, and while making the appt. earlier in the week, inquired about the ipod adaptor. They transferred me to parts, and I was on hold for about 5 minutes until the guy came back and quoted me a price of $208. I asked if that included installation, which sounded about right, but he said the adaptor was only for the 2007 RX-8. I said something along the lines of "Oh, perhaps I misread something..." and left it at that, knowing I hadn't.

I did my research and got a part number, and Friday, when I took my vehicle in, inquired about it again. Once again, they said "our parts person said it's for the 2007 model only."

"Fine, I mean, I can go buy it somewhere else..."

The service guy then sort of said "well, he's just a parts guy" and gave me the name of the third party vendor they have do their installations, because apparently they don't do it themselves.

So, today, I ended up with a product made by Dice Electronics. As far as I can tell, their version works pretty much the same as the Mazda with one big plus (as far as I'm concerned from what I read, anyways): I can still shuffle through the ipod while it's connected and select playlists without having to worry about the number or using the control panels on the deck. While I can still do that, I chose to have the wire run to the center console where the cupholders are so I can do it myself.

The sound is excellent, and I don't have to worry about the transmitter issues via fm stations any longer (one spot here in Vegas is horrid when driving through).

Anyway, if anybody is interested in more information, you can find the product here:

"We do not yet have a DICE ipod integration kit that is compatible with the selected vehicle:
- 2007 Mazda RX-8"

Message I got on their web site.

Where are you located? I bought the OEM IPOD adapter for my 2004 RX8 from a Mazda dealer for C$150. Do you even own an '8?

I'm located in Las Vegas and have an '06 RX-8. It's a sad day when the customer is better informed than the dealership, but so is the case. Nonetheless, they kept telling me it was for the '07 only, so I went through somebody else and ended up with the Dice model which I didn't even know was an option.

I008com, try ebay. There was a seller there by the name of parkmazda or the like that had some OEM Mazda ipod adaptors. Actually, just click on the link, there's only one left:

Khanmotorsprts in Canada

Mazdaparts.com in the states

And others are available in the vendor forums.

There are DIYs and other photos and such on the site to help you install it. I did mine myself in two to three hours.
