I was looking at RX8 in the summer and decided to wait until now to buy one because of certain credit issues.
Anyway, I am back at it again and want to purchase 06 RX8 MT GT or Touring. I have been reading numerous posts here and have some idea on what my aim should be on pricing. But I can't seem to decide on new or used 2006 model. I know I will have longer warranty and other benefits of buying it new, but I still owe $20000 on my 06 EclipseGT and want to keep the payment about the same.

what would you like answered? i believe you are coming into a good time where prices are in your favor. the year is over and sports cars tend to sell for a lower price in the winter (demand is lower). you may have to do some hunting if you want a new 2006 as there won't be too many out there but those that are have deep discounts.

 

I am just not sure whether I want to buy new or used 2006. I see a number of new 2006 models available in my area, but they are asking for $27000 for GT and used ones below 20,000 miles are at about $20,000 or so. What are the disadvantages of buying this used?

 

just like most cars, when you drive it off the lot you're hit by a big depreciation. many argue that the 8 is inline with other cars but it's still a big hit. $27K is certainly high for an '06 even new though. you should be able to get them down closer to $22K or $23K. and like other cars, buying used you run the risk of buying someone else's problems. i bought used and got myself a great deal. some aren't willing to take that chance and like to be the first one to drive their car.

 

mazda cut back on production. I don't know if they will ever go back to dropping prices by 8k off msrp.

A loaded GT model can run you over 32k. So 27k may not be a bad deal, depending on the options you're getting.

If you're expecting to get 22k ($10k off msrp on a GT with options), I seriously doubt that'll happen.

 

for some reason i thought i have seen people getting closer to the $22K-23K for '06 lately. maybe it's just that i need more sleep.

Probably not helpful here, but what are you doing with that car.
In my own eyes, no offense to you: that car is whoa!..

trade it with the RX8.
Many rather than disagree, will agree with me on this that the RX8 is like 10x "nicer". (which can be interpreted in many ways)than that eclipse.

 

Why are you getting rid of a new 06 eclipse?

Any time you get rid of a 1 year old car, your going to take a huge hit.

Get a used one and avoid the horror depreciation. I have a dealer in the area selling an 05 GT with less then 15K miles for 18ish. You can find good deals if you look. I would avoid the 04's...

 

The 04's should be just as good as other years if all of the recalls have been done and there is a clean history on the particular vehicle. Now, if it has gone through two engines or has a carfax full of problem entries, move on to the next one. Of course, I might be a little biased, as I am hopefully signing papers on a black 04 6MT with 10,000 miles on Monday/Tuesday, after I get it inspected at a local Mazda dealership where I used to get my RX-7 serviced. And I'm trading in an 06 Subaru WRX, because I just don't like the feel of the car - it has a ton of power and grip, but between shuddering/vibrating off and on while driving on the highway(I have paid a bunch for balancing/align.), engine that feels like it is out of a broken-down tractor half the time(sometimes power, sometimes a lot of noise and not much else), etc....And it has only 7,000 miles. Hopefully the person who gets it next has better luck with it than I did, or enjoys the way Subaru's drive more than I do. I think I just missed my rear-drive rotary....
