Gains without FI

Is there any way to see any substantial gains for the Rx8 wihout a turbo? From what ive read on the site so far, all the intakes dont make much power and i dont think that exhausts do much either. And dont flame me either, i just got my 8 2 weeks ago lol

you can get SOME gains. but its gonna cost a lot of $$$. u can go.

intake
header
racing beat pcm reflash
midpipe
exhaust
pulley
flywheel
redline engine and transmission oil
mazsport cooling mod
final gear
nitrous

then u'll get some gains that you'll be happy with. but like i said its gonna be expensive. if you want more bang for the buck, wait for ss9. they probably gonna show new turbo kits or superchargers. so then you'll get more bang for the buck

I don't understand the concept of porting an engine. Can someone explain this or post a link to a thread for it? Sorrry to thread hijack.

It's been said, you won't get many gains with all N/A mods, but I hear the best N/A mod would be the Int-X.

porting is enlarging the intake or exhaust holes or "ports" in the engine to allow more air to be able to leave or enter because of the physically larger hole. If you have the tools you can do this yourself in your garage with a dremel.

Polishing is just well, polishing the spaces to a mirror finish which improves airflow as well.

When I say "have the tools" i do mean physically taking the engine out of the car and disassembling it. If you've never done it before and had a buddy to help and the shop manual you could have everything in and out in about 3 days 6-8 hours of work a day.

Porting the intakes isn't all that great.

Your best NA gains will be with a straight pipe, fuel management, and maybe lightweight flywheel. You can expect maybe 30 hp from it. Most other mods give back hardly any gain (such as catback, intake, pullies, etc).

Or just save up and get 100+ hp from FI.

with this 1500 mod that you can tune or buy preset tunes (not sure about na tune though. last i read they were to busy with fi cuz of the high demand and the fact that it goes with their turbo) but it is imaginable that you can get 220 or 230 to the wheels with other mods on top of it. (intake exhaust and midpipe flywheel)

I wouldn't just do it at home or take it to a buddy unless your buddy is an experienced rotary tech and have the means to flow test what he did. The renesis' ports are large enough as it is and if not done properly, you might lose air velocity in the process. maybe cleaning the ports up might help a little. but I wouldn't pull an engine out just to do that, maybe when it's time to rebuild it...

thnaks for the quick response all. so from the looks of things if i were to spend all that money on all the little things itll most likely cost as much if not more than just getting the turbo. ok so well at least my priorities are straightened out now.... suspension, wheels and brakes first, then fastness lol thanks everbody

I think you can make small improvements.

. Intake
. Pulley
. ECU flash
. Mazsport cooling mod
. ATF cooler and redline/royal purple AT fluid (If Auto)
. 2nd oil cooler (If older AT or 5 speed M/T)

But the problem is price and if you are going to go FI later than some of your NA mods might be a waste of money.

The RX-8, for power gains, needs to go FI. Turbo or Supercharger. Personally, I like concept of going supercharger and then adding some mods/ECU flash on top of that.

Get a lightwieght fly & HD clutch only . You will enjoy the difference & both will compliment F/I when you finally do it . All the other stuff you will barely notice .

He asked for "substantial gains" . IMO the only one on that list that you really feel is the fw . The others all combine for an overall effect but are not substantial .
Even the EMS - I've spent hours trying to get the best out of mine & its not something that I really feel even though I know it is a tad quicker.
