Emissions parts removed to increase performance?

Aside from the cat, what other parts emissions related can be removed for a performance increase?

remove the whole muffler piping. IT woould be so loud that you dont even want to drive your car anymore. attacts cops as well

if you move the MAF to somewhere else, that violate emission as well.

With the exception of the cat, nothing in the emissions system is hurting your performance.

There's one more I can think of - You can put in a catch can / breather to stop oil from going back into the engine via intake.

You can remove the gas cap too, This will give you a slight increase in WHP in the mid range.

Why would removing the cat improve performance? If it does, how much power do you get?

If I recall correctly, removing the cat frees up approximately infinity horsepower.

5 Hp? Out of 238? That's a pretty small price to pay for clean air.

Remember the pre-cat days when cars had air pumps as part of emission control? Not only did those things eat up significant power, but they caused all kinds of drivablilty problems. I don't mind my cat one bit. And if I want to improve straight-line performance, I'll lose some weight.

The current air pumps aren't belt driven though.

More like 5 out of 190. I agree, it's not worth it, and not because of the enviroment. It's smelly, noisy and the gains aren't worth it (Unless you go turbo! Turbo turbo turbo)

Air pumps for emissions? Yikes! You'd think they would have learned from the 70s.

I haven't done any crawling around the mechanicals on my 8 yet, and the newest car I've done mechanical work on was my '87 Accord. No air pump on that.

I remember the transition to air pumps in the late 60s, early 70s, and how bad things were. BMW introduced their 2002 as a replacement to the 1600 because the air-pumped 2 liter engine matched the power of the unencumbered 1.6 liter.

I never did remove an air pump from a car of that era - the need for all of us to breath kind of kept me in line. But I never looked askance at anyone who did.

The only problem I've ever had with cats is how expensive they are to replace, and having to be careful to not park on top of flammable material.
