My first RX-8 build...

So we finished up most of the work on the new Falken Tire / NTB / Mazdaspeed RX-8 over the past week or so, and I thought you guys might like to see what we did. It's a 2007 BIW (body in white) from Mazdaspeed. We spent about 1280 hours on it between us at the shop. It is base tuned to 300hp to break in the engine, and we will retune next Tuesday for max power, which will turn down to a steady 600whp for competition. Everything with exception of the vinyl wrap on the outside, and the polishing of all the aluminum was done in house at Speed Machine. Basic specs are as follows:

13B-RE Cosmo engine, NRS ceramic seals, cryo treated, engine studs, basically everything I know about building engines, I put in this one.
custom twin turbo manifold
twin garrett gt28rs turbo's, T3 .63 A/R
Blitz GTR intercooler w/speed machine end tanks
twin Turbosmart race port BOV's
twin turbosmart 48mm progates
98% of all fittings on the car are Adel Wiggins clamps (39 in total)
3" true dual aluminum exhaust
SSR MS1 wheels (18X10 +5 front and 18X10.5 +6 rear)
Tein mono flex coilovers with dual EDFC
All sparco safety gear
4300K IPF HID retrofit lights (low and high beans)
Mazdaspeed aero kit
APR GT wing
Fuel Safe 12gal fuel cell
dual aeromotive A1000 fuel pumps (one per rail)
dual A1000 FPR
aeromotive tsunami feed pump (from tank to surge tank)
6x1000cc RC injectors
Speed Machine twin 72mm BDL TB intake manifold
wilwood dual master pedal assembly
project mu 4 piston 4 pad front calipers (rear are on the way from Japan)
teflon lined brake lines
PWR offroad oil cooler
Ron Davis double pass, dual core radiator (custom by us)
FAL fan
all non hard lined hose is HS-79 XRP hose
1/2" fuel lines except on top of motor
custom speed machine urethane engine mounts
1301 halon fire system
AIM digital dash
Haltech E11v2 ECU
Turbosmart E-Boost 2

That's a basic list LOL if you have any questions feel free to ask. The car will be competing on the Falken Motorsports team throughout the 2007 season, and is replacing the Falken FD that we built for them in 2005. I'll post up what we find out on the dyno next week.

Here are the pics from practice day yesterday. It got shot for a magazine, so these are from that.

Looks Great! Counting parts & labor I guess you spent close to $150,000 on this?? My basic question is can anything from this project trickle down to the average owner? From reading your mods can any of these work for us?

Your fuel cell / delivery system. A 12-gallon cell in the trunk for extra capacity or track only use to help with the fuel starvation issue on the track some have.

Selling your custom turbo manifold for people that wish to build their own turbo system.

Making some of your higher quality turbo parts work with the off the shelf turbo’s some owners have.

If your exhaust Dyno’s well could you market just that to us?

Your safety equipment might be in demand. To be exact a race seat and mounting rail that maximizes headroom.

Your engine mounts streetable?

Another gauge pod option would be nice.

Are your brake upgrades feasible for street / HPDE use?

Wow, alot of replies :D Here are some quick answers...

With the fuel system, That would have to be tailored more towards a stock engine car rather than what we have. We have more than enough fuel capacity for 3 cars in this. Why? Redundancy. I would rather have a pump go out, and be able to move some lines and be back on track than have one pump, and be SOL. :D Thing is, this system is a return style system, and if I'm not mistaken the RX-8 factory system is returnless? The cell isn't hard at all, but I think a surge tank setup for a stock car would be better. The cell requires you to ditch the stock style big muffler in the rear, because that is where it sits. We have no mufflers so it makes it easy.

We could sell the turbo manifold, but it wouldn't work on the renesis since it is side port exhaust and we have a cosmo engine in ours. One could be made though, but I would have to get ahold of a stock car to see where the stock intakes and other things near are to ensure a perfect fit.

As for turbo parts, for sure. I don't really care for any of the offered turbo kits right now, and since I didn't get a complete car, I just opted with the known reliable high hp potential cosmo engine. I would have loved to do R&D on the renesis, but the budget and time wasn't there.

The race seat, rail and slider are all off the shelf parts from Sparco. EVO seat, RX-8 sliders and rails. My head doesn't hit the roof, and I'm 6'3" I probably could offer them as a package or something for the forum guys since I get a really good deal through Sparco.

The engine mounts are streetable IMHO. they are actually nicer than urethane FD mounts in FD's. Vibration is at a minimum since we mounted them inline with the rails of the car, so the twisting doesn't transfer to the chassis, since it doesn't move much at all. Just enough to take the vibration out of the chassis.

Gauge pods...again I would need a stock RX-8 to see. I think they gave us a Miata dash. It had the part number for an RX-8 dash, but I have never seen one likeours. Any of you have that dash with the smooth black part?

The brakes are amazing, but at a price that makes you look for someplace to sit. They retail at just under $10,000 for the fronts alone. Our rear aren't even here yet. But they are by far the best brakes I have ever stopped any car with. Also after a day at the track, after each run they were barely warm. Granted in an HPDE they would get more heat, but they are incredibly well made, and bolt on with hand tools with no mods needed.

Warranty? What is that? haha This car didn't even have a VIN until we gave it one :P

For HP, it's hard to say since I have never done this setup before, but from the break in dyno numbers, and how the car acts, I am estimating at over 600rwhp, and down tuned to 600hp for track use. That will give us power to spare for the really big fast tracks.

Dec 2001 is when I rejoined rx7club after the big server crash. I have tooled around here since it opened, but never really had any RX-8 questions, so I mostly just browse on occasion. I did come here back when we started the build looking for what others were running on wheels and offsets, but I decided to get more aggressive on offset as a gamble, and it worked (thankfully!)

For the total cost of the car, I can't really say what was paid, but I can say that if you came to us, and said I have no car, build me that if would require about $225,000 to $250,000 to complete.

My next few events with the car are a demo at the new track in SLC utah on the 28th and 29th of this month, then the next weekend is D1GP in New Jersey, then the weekend after that is Formula D round 2 in Altanta at Road Atlanta. If you guys go to any of these, make sure to say hey at the booth! I'll be the huge guy in blue Falken Motorsports coveralls with a speed machine logo on the front pocket by the car :P

Thanks again for the comments. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

That is some great work for a track car. Was wondering if you would indulge me in what wheel sizes and offsets you are running?

Surprised no one has brought up MPG or winter driving concerns yet.
