Hey everyone,
We just recently finished some prototypes of our plug and play RX8 coil kit, and have been playing around with these on our new shop RX8 test mule for a little while now. We've had such great success with these coils on the FD3S that it only seemed fair to adapt it to the RX8, especially considering the coil issues that plague this car




The RX8 kit will be very similar to our FD3S kit. We’ve put these coils through the ringer with at least a couple hundred setups out there over the last few yearswith absolutely fantastic results. These are running on everything from stock cars with stock ECU’s to 700+HP 13b FD turbo e85 builds. These coils were basically built for the rotary and are dead on reliable. The RX8 kit will come with:

- RX8 specific mount (in stock coil location)
- Full plug-and-play standalone wiring harness (RX8 specific harness, plug and play connectors, direct power from battery, high amp relay, milspec wiring, and high-temp silicone abrasion/ heat resistant cover).
- Ultra-low resistance custom spark plug wires
- Mounts 4 IGN-1A/AEM smart coils.

For those not familiar with the IGN-1A coils, they were specifically designed for two-stroke marine racing engines, designed to be extremely high output with extraordinarily fast recharge times. Since rotaries fire twice as often per revolution compared to a piston engine, LS coils or other piston-engine specific coils have a really hard time recharging fast enough. While the LS coils are capable of high output they've been designed with a 6,000rpm redline. 9,000rpm on a rotary is the equivalent of 18,000rpm on a piston engine. The LS coils were never built do do that... the IGN-1A's were





These will work with the stock ECU dwell time settings (we run them on stock FD ecu's as well with great results), but for high HP builds or forced induction on an aftermarket ECU, they really shine. The IGN-1A are hands down THE coils for rotary applications and we haven't come across anything that can keep up yet.

Yeah we're trying to keep it in the same price bracket give or take. The harness is nearly identical aside from the RX8 specific connectors, and plug wire lengths, and the bracket is specifically made for the 8 to fit in the stock coil mount location. It's a bit larger so it may be slightly more expensive but it shouldn't be too much more, if anything.

 

Is there any kind of fuse to protect from melting/shorting?

 

Oh hells yes! The biggest baddest fully sealed fuse terminal you've ever seen!

Actually we source power direct from the battery, not the measly 20ga stock wires.

We only use the stock connectors to get the signal for each coil, and use the "power" to each coil as a signal only to trigger our sealed 40A relay. All power for coils come direct from the battery with a 14ga dedicated power wire, dedicated battery and engine ground, and even sensor ground/reference ground for high horsepower applications.

 

That's good..the stock wires would melt with the current requirements these coils have......

 

I would love to see some pictures of the harness, etc. When do you think it will ship?

That is a gorgeous coil pack. That's a sentence I never thought I'd say.

 

Team, please correct me if Im wrong. Yes, these coils have been discussed before. I believe Harlan is currently using them in his build, as are some other people I am sure. However, this is the first plug and play kit sold. As such, does that not qualify as news?

 

awesome! I have the FD kit. if and when I get an R3 these will be one of the first things to go on it.

 

There's no depinning of OEM connectors with the RX-8, that's only with the RX-7 as they igniter connector (which we use for signal) has no female mate... so we have everyone re-pin to a new connector.

The RX-8 Harness is FULLY plug and play, as in you pull your old coils and plug in our harness to the 4 coil connectors. Our harness grabs signal only from the OEM connectors, and uses it's own dedicated power, batt ground, and engine ground O-ring connections.

I'll post a picture in a few minutes... we've been slammed with work all week.

plug and play prototype harness... unplug your coils and plug this harness in. Grabs signal for each coil and signal for key on that powers the big relay which provides direct battery power to each coil. 40A heavy duty weather sealed relay, and 30A sealed fuse to a dedicated 14ga power wire. You could put popcorn in your motor and these coils would light them off . We've yet to see someone max out the coils but 200-250hp PER coil is the theoretical limit.

OH, so that harness looks different than the one on your site. Much easier to install then.

 

Yep, you just plug it in to the stock connectors and you're good to go, no depinning required. FD guys might be jealous

The fitment of the kit looks nice. I just wanna clean that engine bay though,

 

I still remember the silly claims that they'd never fit in the OE position, burn up the wiring, burn up the spark plugs, blah-blah-blah

SBGarage, have you looked at/into the Series 2 RX-8 Coil Backing Plate as there are some differences, not 'how' 4 OEM Coils install, but the S2 plate has a few extra brackets extended on it for large wiring loom support and other. (don't know if you have compared the two different coil plates and if the mounting of yours would have any issues, just throwing it out there).

Apart from that should be great for all Series 8's.
