Stance GR+ on a 2010 Sport - [56k beware]

Well; I got up at 8.00am this morning to finish up the front set after spending all day on the rear yesterday. This was my first time doing any suspension work so hopefully all is kosher . I made sure to follow directions to the detail, and everything turned out perfect.

Only thing i need now is an alignment and to make sure that the ride height is close on each side. I went to Firestone today, but the guy there turned me away because he thinks the car would scrape driving onto their pit. Personally i think thats a load of BS because my car isn't any lower than a corvette (neighbor has one, compared).

Anyway, here are some pics. Gunna go for an alignment tomorrow, and wash the car too, so I will have more detailed pics soon

(Props go out to low_&_slow for the sale!!)

Congrats on the coilovers...I have the same ones on mine! Looks like your rears have the wrong springs...they look like the 175mm springs when you need the 200mm springs. It will feel and sound like the car is bottoming out when it's really the spring hitting against itself becasue there is not enough spring travel. I recommend you measure the rear springs before going any further.

Oh really!? Mannn this is really going to suck. Are you getting that from looking at the first few pics of the coilovers or the pics of them installed? I only ask because the first few pics are how the coils were delivered to me, and they had a massive preload on them. I undid them and just did a hand tight preload as the DIY video stated

Edit:

^Well (if I can see that well) it looks like the spring is showing some binding by looking at the top of each coil. Here's a pic between the 175mm on the right which gave me problems and the 200mm spring on the left (no issues since installed):

Damn, ... well if I wanted to get the 200mm how would I go about doing that? Can i get them from the guys over at Stance? How much do they cost? Also, would I have to redo the installation of hte rears (aka remove everything) to install the 200mm springs or is there an easier way now that I have it all installed.

Well I got the alignment done today. Camber has been fixed, and the ride heights have been adjusted to match as close as possible . The guy at the shop (goodyear) was awesome, he had no problem adjusting my coils and whatnot. Anyway, the car is riding great, and I made sure to go through a nice bumpy road and didn't hear the springs bottom out so I think I might be ok. There is a little rattle coming from the rear that you really only hear at low speeds. Not sure what it is, it might have been the scissor jack rattling, i dont know, I reseated the jack and will have to take it out for another ride to make sure.

BTW, the guy said I should look into getting some aftermarket tie rods to improve my bump handling. Any merit to that?

On your shipping invoice it will state what springs are installed, contact Stance Sales if you suspect you have the wrong springs. I just contacted Stance 2 days ago and received a reply today regarding replacements. Scan a copy of your invoice and email it Attn Scott along with the issue. I personally have the 175mm, and need the 200mm. These always felt too soft for my liking.

You will need to do the following with new springs:

Remove old springs from assembly, install new springs, reinstall, get alignment.... note, you wont need a spring compressor.

I actually managed to order the 200mm / 7K springs for the rear. I was shooting for 6K but they didn't have any in stock. I dont expect there to be much noticable difference between 6 and 7, plus i prefer a stiffer ride. I will have some pics of the install when they get delivered (friday?)

Looks good. I have the exact same car and ordered PSS9s. I like your rear drop, how much is it? I'm gonna go with a 1" lowering I wont need camber correction with that will I?

And does anyone know what the stcok alignment spects for the 09-10s are?

Not sure what the stock alignment specs are but my rear drop is 1.3" (i tried to match what would come from a set of koni's with tein S-techs). My springs will be here tomorrow so I will measure again just to give you more accurate numbers. As far as camber goes, apparently when i took my car for alignment the guy told me not to lower any more because I maxed out my camber. I can only assume that you will need a camber adjustment with a 1" drop, but they will do that when you go for an alignment. I guess if you go more than about 1.3" you will need to get a camber kit to correct it.

Installed the new springs today. Just a heads up for anyone looking to replace their springs. You do NOT need to remove the dampers to do the job. All you really need to do is to unbolt the damper from the wheel hub, and loosen the supporting nuts on the top so that you have some wiggle room.

The new springs

Huge difference as HockeyRX8 pointed out

Lookin good! Im getting the Bilsteins installed on Wed. I noticed that on the stock wheel gap the rear looks a little more than the fronts. But that may be due to the fact that i removed the spare/jack/comrressor/tools--totalling 40 lbs--the day after I bought the thing. Is your spare intact on that 1.3" rear lowering?

Also, I see you have the RE050 (I have the Dunlop 2050s), do they still hold up OK with the new suspension? I fear I might have to upgrade to Star Specs..

Stock the front sits about 0.50 - 0.75" lower than front if i remember correctly, so thats why sometimes you will see lowering springs for the RX that will have a different lowering ratio in the front and back. I actually do not have a spare tire, I only have that kit that comes with the car with the compressor and the seal etc.

Tires are actually doing really well with the suspension. My mechanic made sure to tweak the camber for the tires, and told me that there shouldn't be too much if any extra wear from the lowering. The tires are also pretty sticky for stock, I actually tested the car on a windy road and it held up real well.

The Bilsteins are in! Feels great. But oddly the alignment shop told me there is no camber settings listed on their Hunter machine for my car! Not for ANY model year RX-8. So he couldnt adjust the camber, which in any case is at 1.5 degrees for my 1.25" lowering. But he did pull up what we think are the stock specs for the camber--- .7 front, 1.4 rear. So im OK for the rear and should have no wear but my fronts have way too much as far as feel. pics to follow...

Yup same here, no record of camber settings. I wish i got the print out of what he did but he was showing me and telling me that the camber settings that he applied should be fine. If i remember correctly, i think he set my rears for 1.16 ... i was watching him and he set something to 1.16 in the rear during the alignment, i assume thats teh camber, but i dont know.

paimon, how did u get them to adj u to 1.16? They couldnt do anything without a value for me. I think i'll need a palce that does an old-school "string" alignment lol. BTW, the Bilsteins not only came from the factory set at the MAX lowering, which was 2.5"!!-- u shoulda seen the camber there!--but they instructions were all in german are were totally useless. The shock settings are all backwards----"9" is the softest, and "1" is the firmest. I'm at 8 front, 6 rear.
