Series 2 Oil Consumption

Hey guys/gals, I see this varies from engine to engine but I have yet to add oil to my car and I'm around 1k miles into my oil change. I do premix about 4oz every oil change. \

Just curious how much people are adding in the Series 2 engines and if I should really be concerned. I changed my own oil and when cold and after a start check I was at the top dot, Somewhere around 4.5 quarts of oil for the oil change. I'm beginning to think maybe the floor in the shop I work in isn't "level" and I could have overfilled it.

Note - I drive sprinted and a good amount of highway driving so I believe I should be at least half a quart range with 1k miles in.

Thoughts and suggestions, much appreciated!

You pre-mix @ every oil change?.. I guess you mean @ every tank fill?

Anyway, Oil consumption does vary a little depending on 'how one drives' and also age/miles of/on engine.

I go through a Litre (quart) every 5000 KMS, or 3000 miles...been very consistent.

But yes, if you are checking naturally a level floor/ground is the best way to do so.

Also Mazda recommends that you check 5 minutes AFTER a hot engine turn off.

Again for me (level floor) I always check and fill on a stone cold engine, IF you check on a cold engine then a full oil level should be about 5 mil or 1/4 of an inch below the F (full mark) on your S2 dip stick, naturally if you want to check the Mazda way, then in my case F would mean Full with hot oil.

I have a 2010 that sees the dealer for oil changes. I check the oil as recommended in the owners manual (hot engine, wait 5 minutes.). When it gets to the 1/2 Qt low mark I add a 1/2Qt. This seems to happen as soon as every 500-700 miles, certainly before 1,000 miles.

This seems like I'm using more oil than you are reporting. I drive highways, with some stop-and-go and over the last 32k miles I've averaged around 17 mpg. I try to redline at. Least once a day after the engine is warm, but otherwise I think I am fairly easy on the engine, rpm-wise.

My 2011 R3 uses about 1/2 qt every other week (400 miles). I have a very regular driving routine that allows for plenty of spirited driving, especially hard acceleration. The oil consumption is much less for highway driving. It depends on how you drive, but I believe that is normal oil consumption.

Correction, I premix every fill as stated :-). I'm going to check my oil in the shop today before I leave work. Our engines hold roughly 4.5 quarts correct?

Also, I haven't had to add any oil so far which lead to making a thread. I have a 2009 R3 with 9k miles on it.

As I said, get into a correct oil checking routine that suits you..do it precisely @ the same location and time...naturally if you are adding too much oil @ any oil change then your consumption records will differ.

In my world I talk Litres (4l with out Oil Filter 4.3l with ).
Anyway...S2 engine in quarts..4.4 US Quarts normal oil change, 4.6 US Quarts with a new Oil Filter, so IF you are putting in 4.6 without a new oil filter you are adding too much oil.

The two EMOP system on S2's is completely new and nothing like the MOP on older rotaries.
Only one part is similar and that is the 6 Nozzle Jets, even they are not the same.

Anyway, IF these are not working (two EMOP's) therefore not consuming engine oil you would get a CEL light on dash, as any electrical load resistance or no oil pressure @ EMOP #1 will also result in a CEL light.

The only other possibility could be a blocked Nozzle Jet (s), however I have yet to hear of any issues...

I use around 0.5 quarts every 1000 miles. Mostly highway driving but plenty of spirited runs mixed in there. Been pretty consistent since I got the car. Like ASH, I prefer to do all my oil checks and additions when the engine is completely cold; and as such aim for a tad under the FULL line so that I'm right at the full line when the engine is warm.

Thanks guys for the tips! I verified that I am using oil, maybe a 3rd of a quart with a tad over 1k miles today. I will start doing the cold setting so I can accurately check my oil at specified locations. I'm sure I overfilled the oil from my oil change so I'm sure I'm consuming more then stated.

It appears that the oil consumption data I've pulled from our website - for those who have posted - appears to be 0.55 quarts every 1000 miles (0.333 L/1000 km). The S1 and S2 have statistically that same oil consumption. Check out the charts. Post those oil consumption data so I can update our stats.

My long-term update is that my 2010 GT is consuming between 0.5-0.9 L/1000 miles. More often than not the average is about 0.8 L/1000 miles with just a few low oil consumption points near 0.5 L/1000 miles. I measure the oil level at a level service station (same one) or home using the supplied OEM dipstick and always return it to full. My OCI is about 1000-3000 miles but more close to the 1000-1500 mile change frequency. I use conventional Supertech 5W20 (SN) with a Mazda N3R1 oil filter (every other oil change).

I've topped up 300ml recently after 2000 miles. I checked it cold on my drive after it was filled from a service so I know the first dot below full is where it needs to be. I just top up to that.

That doesn't sound like nearly enough oil injection.

You are right Loki - the target is 556 mL per 1000 miles driven with a range of oil consumption reported by members of 500 to 900 mL per 1000 miles driven.

Depends how hard on it you are. My wife is often in the car so it is gently driven for most of those miles.

That's not a good idea, these engines need to be wound out to avoid problems.

It gets a blast at the weekend. It is a very healthy engine. Compression tested only a few weeks ago. Numbers 7.4-7.6. You don't need to blast the car every time. It is also premixed.

does anyone know where this Series 2 (S2 series II) metering oil pump MOP chart came form. It is not in the factory service manual in the S2 sticky section.

I'd like to learn more about the S2 OMP design.

The 2009 RX8 Service Highlights Manual. The SHMs are where most of the detailed tech info is published for service techs to have a better understanding of the systems.
