Series II (2009-2011) Mazda RX-8 Oil Filter part # N3R1-14-302

Where is the Engine Oil filter been relocated on the 2010 model...?

Everything posted shows the 2008 and prior accessible from the top of the engine compartment.. is the series II change up now underneath near the drain plug?

yes. https://www.rx8club.com/series-ii-di...change-184207/

Follow the instructions - it will require you to remove the plate to access the filter. A cap-mounted filter remover will only work easily in this case - a great investment. Mazmart has the best prices on N3R1 (Series II) filters - buy many to save on shipping.

lakersfan1 04-10-2016 07:14 AM

FYI, I think this thread has outlived reality. Most manufacturers are making different oil filters for Series II than Series I now. Fram is the only one I found that's still using the same part number for all RX-8s.

ASH8 04-10-2016 02:43 PM

Really, OK, so they (other brands) are going to make a specific Oil Filter to the correct specifications (for Series 2 RX-8) for only 15,000 S2 (R3) in all Model Years in North America....there were less than 30,000 Series 2 made for worldwide use in 4 years.

I suggest "IF" you believe there is a OF around to cross reference it's number and see 'if' it is used by another car maker or model.

The genuine Japan made Tokyo Roki oil filter was specifically made for the Mazda S2 RX-8, it is not used on any other Mazda model and or car.

But yeah, most Mazda oil filters will fit and work......but.

Steve Dallas 04-10-2016 07:44 PM

The S2 oil filter is $9 shipped from Amazon. I don't see any reason to use anything else.

wannawankel 04-11-2016 08:35 AM

I agree with Dallas and Ash8 in that that S2 N3R1 filter was specifically made for the Series 2 for higher oil pressures. If you can get another manufacturer to certify it can operate at those same conditions, please post.

In a separate note, certain Honda motorcycles also have the same issue their supplier's filter (OEM) has better specifications (and if you slice one in half) is clearly superior to the Fram/BOSCH/Delco/Dana equivalents.

Oil on the other hand...

Mazmart's pirce is less if you buy a few in advance.

Steve Dallas 04-11-2016 08:58 AM

^ True, but their shipping cost is high enough that you only save around $6 on a quantity of 10.

PLEASE take a look at this link, we need your help now, it is self explained.

I don't see any technical specs, specifically the bypass psi rating, which is the key point ASH8 is making.

I don't know about Australia, but in the US and Canada, the OEM filter is pretty cheap(only CAN$11 with tax) and is made by Tokyo Roki, which made oil filters for other Japanese sports cars like the JDM S2000. It's actually such a steal at that price that I don't even bother looking for anything else.

About the only thing cheaper than the OEM stuff is the FRAM orange cans... And you probably don't want those on any car, let alone an RX-8.

Yep. I buy OE filters for ~$9 each, which is competitive with any other decent filter on the market.

As much as we like to hate on Fram filters, I used them in several vehicles for hundreds of thousands of miles and 20+ years, before the Internet told me they were junk. If I could put 300K miles on a 1990 Honda Civic (among several other vehicles) with nothing but the cheapest Fram filters, they can't be all that bad. It's OK though. I have seen the light and use Wix filters in our other cars now...

TeamRX8 09-02-2019 05:44 PM

At the risk of stirring up all the hornets again, just thought it was worth pointing out that the Fram HP17 racing filter is 2.63” OD x 3.5” tall with M20-1.50 screw on attachment, 22 psi bypass and 20 micron @ 94% efficieny rating, 200 psig oil pressure rating, 350+ psig burst rating

in other words, a potential alternative to the OE S2 filter in the event an alternative was needed

https://www.fram.com/media/1075/fram...sell-sheet.pdf

ASH8 09-03-2019 01:16 AM

Fram certainly have come a long way I guess, 30+ years ago they had a rotten name in the local industry for cheaply made Filters of any-kind and were not recommended here.

As an S2 Owner with standard OE installation location there is zero room for any larger Filter in Diameter than the S2 OEM, which is the same Diameter as S1 which is smaller in length and not the same BP Rated set-up.(as we know).

As for Filter length again there is little to no extra room for a much longer than Original S2 as the install and removal of same just fits in the multi sided housing/thread area without hitting Oil Cooler Pipes/fittings....it can be a PITA.

Apologies Mark as I have not compared your physical sizes against the OEM S2, as I said there is next to no room for anything larger in a standard S2 Install oil filter, but YES if identical then it will fit.

TeamRX8 09-03-2019 02:21 AM

Well my apology if I was misinformed; can you please confirm the S2 filter OD and length for me?

per my link, the Fram racing filter isn’t anything like what the cheapo street filter they were getting bashed so many years over

i’m planning to use this HP17 on a remote mount, so there’s not any fitment issue for me

.

ASH8 09-03-2019 05:04 AM

Base diameter 70mm, length 85mm
See first post This Thread. ;)

TeamRX8 09-03-2019 07:16 AM

Thank you Ash; sorry to be such a noob; glossed right over it :o:

So this one is 66.8mm OD x 88.9mm long; slightly smaller OD and only 3.9mm (0.15”) longer, dang, thought there was more room for it than that ...

.

ASH8 09-03-2019 07:36 PM

I think it will fit, just. Zero room for extra diameter, that 4 mil extra length may fit, just.

Did an oil change 5 days ago, stumbled on this thread a couple days ago.... did an oil filter swap tonight! :D

OEM NR31-14-302 filter was $9.99 CAD at the dealer. Not even bad.

Doblegota 01-12-2021 02:41 AM

Happy new year everybody!

Actually I’m using wix oil filter (wL7200 for Spain) but now I have a new question because the engine uses a modified oil pressure (upgrade like R3). Only the back one. The front one is original.

I want to ask if with these upgrade I should use the R3 oil filter or still using oem s1 oil filter.

kind regards.

Did you shim the front oil pressure regulator? When I did mine not only I replaced my rear OP regulator but also shimmed the front one

Doblegota 01-12-2021 11:58 AM

Nop. Stays as Oem s1 model.

DocWalt 01-12-2021 02:02 PM

The S2 filter is superior to the S1 filter, I'd just use the S2 filter.
