Occasional Starting Issues

Recently my 2009 Sport auto with about 50k, began developing starting issues. Sporadically it will crank without starting, but it has never failed to start eventually, either on its own or with some throttle. Its happened after driving long distances and from cold, but only a few times over the past couple months. I recently swapped the plugs but it has since repeated the issue.

Is it just a warm start issue, or should I get a compression test. I bought the car used, but have since kept up with maintenance myself mostly, so I worry about providing proper maintenance receipts should I need a new engine. Research gave me mixed opinions on trying Seafoam and there's been no reports of S2 starter failure. What's my next step?

Thanks.

Hi, I think you should get it scanned for any stored codes to start.
I would think the coils would fail faster than the plugs. If it's misfiring I think it would throw a CEL, but I read somewhere it doesn't always come on.

It's unclear if this is a bigger problem when hot than when cold. If so, get a compression test. If not, replace your ignition. S2 coils should last longer than prior revisions, but we don't really know how long they do actually last.

It might be the coils. My car sees a lot of city driving and short trips. I'll spring for a BHR upgrade just for the peace of mind. How much should a test run me? My local dealer loves to swindle. Anything you can recommend to clean any carbon buildup I might have? Thanks.

once in a while maybe 1/50 chance of happening, it will crank for 3-4 seconds before starting, dont know why, performances are good, could have been fuel in the cylinder when you last turned it off, or could be the position of the rotors when you turn it back on. Im pretty sure it happenned to everybody at lease once. if its not happening frequently I wouldnt worry about it

It's been happening more frequently, but I have been making more short trips for work in the past month than ever prior. Today it cranked for a few seconds and eventually started, so I believe my battery, ignition and plugs to be fine. I'll seafoam the tank and get a compression test to be safe.

Apex seal failure terrifies me.

Check the battery voltage after it sits overnight. Then get someone to check the battery voltage while you crank the starter.

Thank you for your answers, finally I used the mazda procedure from the owner manual and it work great after only 2 shots.

1- gaz and clutch to the floor
2- Ingnition at on for 8 sec
3- release gaz
4- Start normally for 10 sec max

This cut the fuel pump when it crack to unflood.

Work for me!
