the dealer told me that mazda said the steering rack went bad and that fried the eps. i am 10000 out of warranty so it on me. mazda said it had one other case of this happening but they covered it on warranty. any one on this forum had this problem?. do i have any change at all of getting mazda to cover it?

BUT I would suggest looking at the Series 1 fixes stated by 9K if your mechanically inclined. Unless Mazda pays the whole bill, it may be cheaper for you to try to fix it yourself.

I looked online, the steering rack assembly is the same S1 vs. S2. The actual computer module is different. Can't verify if the short harness mentioned in the thread is the same but on this website it says 2004-2011. Enter this part number and Mazda: F151-67-SH0D

my car is at the dealer, they have given me a loaner 6 which is good. the service rep wanted to have another 8 compared with mine to see if the computer was reading the same, i cant complain about that. the service rep told me they checked the wiring harness and it checked good. is the steering pump the same as the series 1. i am confused about how the rack or pump going out can damage the computer. the service rep wanted to make sure the computor eps was really bad as it is a $800 part.

I'm not sure what you mean buy "pump". There is no steering pump. So they say you need a module and steering rack?

1. You already have the modified "Short Power Cord" when you car was made there are no other updated parts, has the dealer looked at it?, perhaps coolant overflow has got into wiring connections, a common problem with S1 without modded short power cord?.
2. Yes, the Steering Racks are the same as S1.
3. Yes, the PS ECU is S2 Specific and I know of no problems with them.
Warranty, I would be approaching MNAO politely and asking for assistance (goodwill)...they may pay some of the costs...after all it is your mileage which has finished your B2B warranty protection.

i was on the phone with the service rep and he said it was a steering gear/ motor . he also has asked the mazda rep to call them as he feels it shouldn't be going out on this new a car. the dealer is being as good as i can expect . i have asked about the wiring and they did say there was some residue on the computer box but not on the inside. i politely asked about the wiring and was told it was ok. i don't think they checked it. but that is one of my next options. they are talking about $2500 total if mazda wont help

I would STILL be getting them to check the "Short Power Cord", why?, well there is a possibility that Coolant overflow has done its usual job, as there has been NO change in ALL Series RX-8's if coolant overflows it runs all over these steering wire POWER cables.
LP, Look at the links above, I should not need to repeat the procedure.
I would be talking to MNAO not the dealer, the dealer will not decide warranty.

mazda has agreed to pay for the steering motor/gears or the whole rack , i am not sure. but the dealer wants to try and use my old EPS. now i still have their 6 for the weekend and however long it takes for a new steering rack to come in. the service rep is well versed with the wiring problems and series 1 and said the tests were all good on my short wiring harness, they agreed to double check the harness. my thought was to pay for a new one just in case, good insurance and piece of mind. i am open to suggestions about appealing to mazda about my EPS if they want to reuse it. my read of the above threads which i was browbeat into reading suggested that even when the harness was repaired or replaced the EPS and steering rack would go out later . ASH thank you for pushing me.

Don't worry about the EPS or Power Steering ECU...let the dealer do their job.
You have a Mazda 6 to drive and its not costing you...good result
IF and I say IF it turns out to be the ECU (doubt it), they will also replace it for nothing...just cool off...and wait...and they will leave the new rack on your car, they won't remove it.

continuing tail
dealer said EPS was bad, ordered EPS. they asked to clean wiring harness. put new EPS in and steering rack is now bad., they order new one, they asked to clean harness. they do clean after gentle pushing. get new rack and put back in old EPS and it works. put old rack back in and old rack works, so now they are charging me $300 for labor. car is out of warranty. they agree it might be wiring harness but asked me to wait and use car for awhile. now mazda rep agreed to pay for new rack so i have a history . i got a new six for 10 days . over all i am not unhappy and if the EPS and rack do go in future perhaps i will get a break.
