AB How to read CEL code

Hello 8-masters,

This is probably covered in another thread elsewhere, but for the life of me attempts to search it out have failed.

Regardless... HOW does one read the CEL code? WHERE does one plug the reader into the car? Finally - any leads on the technology that makes this work would be appreciated.

I don't have an immediate need - just a desire to learn.

Thanks in advance. D

Where to read: Most autoparts stores will read the codes for free. Alternatively, buying an OBD2 code reader is less than the cost of a dealer's diagnostics fee. Then you have bluetooth OBD2 dongles that will allow you to connect to the OBD2 port with a smartphone or tablet (with an appropriate installed app, Torque is the best one for Android).

The port itself is above the driver's left knee, behind the plastic shield that flanks the steering column. It is to the right of the hood release lever. You may have to get down there and look to find it the first time. Most of us reach for it without having to see where we are reaching for.
