Removing rear box baffles

Never thought about this till today, my friend also has a series 2 and today he has gutted his cat and removed his rear box baffles, sounds really good... So I ask him will it affect your car? His reply!! (I dunno mate) "sounds good though" I laugh and say yes your rite on that one there!

Now I would like to ask if anyone else has done this and what the pros and cons would be..!?

I would do mine if I think it's perfectly fine to do so without compromising my reliability ect..

My series 2 is due back very soon freshly rebuilt and street ported, so if this is a bad option I won't bother...

Also going to remove the air box walls and first maf grille in air box after reading about this..

If anyone can advise me on all this with the rebuild and street porting that's done that would be amazing!

Thanks guys

Moved, DIY is for when you have a set of instructions to provide.

Thanks, and sorry about that!

Thinking now to remove the cat for a straight through pipe.

Then delete the rear box and make straight pipes?

I'm toying with ideas and reading up a lot.

I want something custom to myself, but still want the best all round power.

Now would adjusting my exhaust to straight through, let's stick with 2.5" make a better roar and good performance?

Would it be better just just delete the cat and remove rear baffles!? And if it's possible to remove them how. Hence series II

Also is it safe and reliable to the car removing any restrictions to straight through all the way?

thanks guys

Read this before you go straight pipes: https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...t-pipe-250297/

The car will not suffer any harm running straight pipes. It's your head, ears, and brain that will be harmed...and that of every single friend, family member, neighbor, and copper you drive past.

And post #2 here has your midpipe options: https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...idpipe-251509/

There aren't many options for power increases over stock, the stock setup is that good.

If you do that, your going to find it extremely loud. The catalyst does a lot to quiet the rotaries exhaust.

Am thinking to just keep the original cat and delete the back box so it louder but not to loud then tig weld straight pipes set up to the maybe with very slightly larger burnt tips.

Can I ask what the original internal diameter of the r3 exhaust is?

And many thanks for the links will do some more reading!

Question: Why don't you just get a proper resonated midpipe and whatever catback sounds good to you? You aren't going to gain power from straight pipes at all, and at BEST you are going to be driving a car that you and the people that you care about can't tolerate.

Just want something different buddy, so going custom ways to accommodate, as long as I don't loose to much power it'll be ok, believe me I love loud cars!! Bugger everyone else!! Sounds bad but it's what I like! And as long as my car won't be affected in a bad way it's cool. I think keeping the standard cat is a good idea now and just delete the rear box with straight standard size piping. :)

RIWWP 03-24-2014 05:53 PM

I don't think you really understand how loud it can get, but I guess you will find out. It's your ears.

I'm thinking to source a standard r3 rear box and experiment first just incase it is too loud for even me!

Not going to ruin my exhaust then have to find another standard one once done.

So will source a spare and get to work and still have a original just incase it's tragically annoying!! Lol

I tell you what. Before you spend anything on your exhaust, just take the pieces off and see how loud it really is. That should convince you we know what we are talking about.

So basically just remove the last part - rear box.

Then that will give the same sound?

Cheers mate

RIWWP 03-24-2014 06:38 PM

yes.

don't leave it like that, as the cat exit is then dumping hot exhaust gases and possibly flames right on the bottom of the fuel tank, but a quick run around the block won't harm anything
