Ok so I am looking into upgrading my 09 AT(shut it) RX8 and I want to make sure I am not missing anything or if I am being ridiculous about things. If I don't name a brand of something, I am still looking into what I want.

This will also probably be in the order of acquisition throughout the many years it will take to do this.

Here goes:

MazdaEdit software and OpenPort
Hi-flow cat (possibly the RP Supercat, but not sure yet)
Cat-Back
Level 10 Transmission, torque converter and valve body
Engine rebuild kit
Goopy Apex seals
Turblown Turbo kit (and all the extra stuff needed to move everything for it)


I'll also be looking into a new suspension at some point, but not sure yet.

I am also still reading up on if intake/exhaust porting is even worth my time and money. From what I understand there isn't a lot of gain from this anyway.

If I decide not to turbo I will end up swapping the manifold for something better but haven't looked into it yet.

I plan on getting rid of (or increasing if I can) the redline beep once I swap all the stuff from Level 10 so I can have a higher redline.

I plan on using this as a daily driver and possibly auto cross in the future. I don't know. I just want to add more fun to my car.

Have you done any research on the parts you're wanting to upgrade?
I recommend you do as much reading as you can before you get too involved in modifying. Lots of money for little power gain...

I'd put the engine rebuild kit as the top priority.

Porting can result in gains of up to ten percent, with the proper modifications and tune.

Also, what will you "swap the manifold" with? I have yet to find one aftermarket rx8 intake manifold. Please, teach me the ways of installing imaginary products!

I've done a bit of research and have PLENTY more to do. Right now most of my reading has to do with MazdaEdit, because if I am too scared to use that there is no point in going any further.

I am just looking into what I could be missing before I go completely nuts. I am aware of the slight power gains I would get, but I don't plan on getting rid of my 8 unless it explodes in a fiery ball.

I shouldn't need a rebuild until I am ready to do everything. I did just get a new engine and all.

Still trying to decide if I even want to turbo my car. Maybe I will just keep it NA for a while and turbo it in the future when they release that imaginary RX9.

You telling me that these things just don't appear when you want them? That's crap.

Actually I meant exhaust manifold. The Turblown kit comes with one and that's what was in my head when I typed it. I guess we can swap that to headers instead of manifold.

As for the porting, I was under the impression that because the center plate had the shared exhaust that it didn't have that high of an increase. I guess I have more reading to do on that then.

If I can get a pretty decent increase with a NA engine I would prefer that, I know it will be pricey. Not as pricey as a turbo (and not as fun) though.

As I said, this will be for when I go insane in the future. None of this will be happening until I get two things: A house and a second car.

And NA mods are not less expensive than FI, as far as cost:power ratio

If you want cheap power, buy a Greddy turbo and start soing your research on MazdaEdit

If you want big power, you will need to build the motor, buy a fuel pump, fuel injectors, three inch exhaust, and a host of supporting mods. Also, set aside ten grand for a second rebuild after your motor goes Zoom Zoom Boom. I am twelve thousand dollars into my turbocharging project, and I am not done. The car is currently enjoying Fred Flintstone power: the courtesy of my two feet.

As for the cost:power I see it as I can buy part by part and work towards my goal for NA but if I do FI it's a big hit to the wallet all at once. We shall see. I may just bitch out of this after I read up on it for a while longer.

I have a RacingBeat header (manifold) fitted to my R3 with no issues.
Air pump removed and it's mated to a BHR resonated midpipe and soon-to-be Exoticspeed R1-T Exhaust system (when they finally release it for the R3!)

So yes there are parts available. Never dyno'ed the results so I can't comment about power increases but it sure does sound nice!

I was wondering if I wanted to get a resonating midpipe and just swap it out every time I went for inspection. That's why I was thinking the hi-flow cat, because I'm lazy and don't really feel like replacing it every year. Then again I might have to actually replace a hi-flow if/when it fails. Lots of reading on that left to do also.

I also should probably go to a meet up somewhere and just listen to other cars. The youtube vids only do so much.

I've swapped my mid pipe a bunch of times now (cat for street, dual resonated for track) and it's not a bad job if you do a few things to help the job along. First is get extra manifold to cat gaskets, use a new one every time. Second, remove the studs on the front of the mid pipe and use bolts instead, makes getting it out much easier. Third, get a second set of hardware for the back end, saves having to transfer it over. Fourth, get an exhaust hanger removal tool, this makes that pain in the butt job much easier.

Doing those things makes the job take half as long and is much less of a pain.

do not go for turbo. you are better off modifying your engine and your exhaust ports, a weakness, even though you have a new engine. Likewise, the only performance gains would be through the exhaust system.
