Those rims will "fit" but it will depend on what tire you use on whether or not you will have any rubbing.

A 275/35 will have rubbing with rear seat passengers (unless you roll your fender). A 265/35 might rub. A 255/40 or narrower tire won't rub.

The tirerack sells that exact same wheel with a +50mm offset and a 275/35 won't rub on it. A 275/35 is the closest wheel of those that I listed to the actual tire diameter of the OEM tire.

You should go with a 50 or 55 offset on the rear with a 9.5 wheel... 45 offset for the front...

I too am wondering how this could be so? Also is there an advantage to even running that width? I realize that wider is more surface and hence more grip, but isn't there a limit?

One reason is that he is using 285/30-18's not 285/35-18 which would be taller and closer to the factory wheel diameter.

They are more than an inch shorter in diameter which makes a big difference because there is now more than half an inch of additional wheel gap above the wheel.

When you hit a bumpm, the wheel not only moves in an upward direction but also the top of the wheel moves in an inward direction. That additional half inch probably equates to almost an additional half inch of inward movement by the time the tire would be making contact with the fender lip.

This probably part of the reason he is clearing in the front and back. If he has a +45mm or greater offset for his rear wheels then he shouldn't have any problems.

I don't have as much experience with the fronts rubbing. The only thing I can say is people with 245/40-18 and +40mm offset wheels aren't rubbing. This means if your offset is +50mm like factory you should be able to go with a 265/35-18 and not rub in the front. Now make your wheel a little less diameter with a 285/30-18 (285*.3 < 265*.35) and you now probably will have enough clearance even in the front.

BTW, I bet his wheel stick out pretty bad in the front.
