Somebody around here is running 275/35-18 Hoosiers for competition and says they fit just fine. Not sure about the staggered widths front and rear though.

Do a search in this forum section for "staggered" - you'll find 21 threads that mention staggered wheel/tire setups.

Several people have done it - my opinion is that they're doing it because they like the look.

For performance/handling, I seriously doubt there's a benefit - the stock RX-8 suspension is designed to be running the same size tires front and rear for the intended handling balance. By putting wider tires on the back, you WILL screw up the handling, introducing much more understeer than the stock setup. I'd suggest that is a bad idea, unless you don't care about handling. Then again, this is a sports car - why would you not care about handling?

Regards,
Gordon

This is what I was looking for. My old Z Twin Turbo had "staggered" tires but I guess that is how it was designed. I'm guessing 245/40/18 all the way around is probably the best for handling for the 8.
