CA Tein Basic, better or just for looks?

Is the tein basic coilover setup better than the stock suspension on the 8, or is it mostly for looks? Also part 2, I have never seen rota slipstreams on an rx8 before; if the offset is correct will they work with a rwd car? I have only seen them on fwd. I have an automatic with the 16's so I am thinking about keeping the 16" and just finding a better style.

Tein basics have had a pretty bad review from some owners on here - best to search and develop your own opinion

For the Rota's - what are the wheel spec's you're looking for?? 19's? 18's?? and what's the width and offset??

there's a thread dedicated to rim size questions - search the 'will it fit' thread

Yes, I was looking for a lightweight 16" wheel. I don't want to hurt performance at all because my 05 is auto with the 16" wheels. I didnt even know the difference between a 4 port and 6 port motor before I started reading this board. I am trying to keep as much performance as I can out of my car.

dude...upgrade your wheels...

though the stock 16's are lightweight - they lack width and the stock tires are usually all weather - atleast upgrade to 17's and get a wider set. I believe the stockies are 16x7.5 or 8 - look to upgrade to 17x9 or something - i know the FNo1r's are pretty good or enkei rpf1's - both are light weight and wider

wider sport tires = better traction

I was thinking more like the compound the tire is made out of is better traction. For example If I were to get some falken azenis in a 225 compared to regular summer tire from lets say yokohama or sumitomo with a treadwear of lets say 200 in a 245 or 255 the falkens would grip much better. Or am I completely off base? When I had an SVT focus, I kept the 17" rims the car came with and bought some khumo tires for autox, the sidewall was much thicker and tougher and the treadwear was around 100.

I have Tein Basics. It was my first mod and i didn't know anything at that point. If i were to do it again i would have gone for a different set up.

It is, however, better than stock. Less body roll, more compliant with the road, a little stiff on the ride but much more confidence inspiring on the street than stock.
Can't speak for their use on the track though.

I'd say they are a good cheap upgrade for the not so serious among us but i will be upgrading to the KW Variant 3's (or comparable) after i have some track days under my belt

The basics are better looking than stock and possibly better performing but they ride like crap. I would not buy them again, just get s-tech instead. I would also recommed light 17x9 for looks/performance.

How long would my stock shocks/struts/dampers last if I were to get just springs?

Looks only..

Go with Racing Beat.

You should replace the shocks at the same time.

At least the rears........

granted a better compound will give you a huge advantage over the all weather tires on the stockies - if you were to upgrade in width + compound - you would be looking at a far better gain -

i went from the same setup to 18x8.5's w/falken's and it's almost night and day on dry pavement - turns that i would slip out at became far more feasible - all of which was from personal experience.

I had the Tein Basics and thought they were good for the money. They were a little soft for my taste compared to the stock suspension. I was going to sell my car and sold the Teins but decided to keep the car and mod the **** out of it again and ended up getting the Megan Racing Coilovers..which are amazing!

wut???? tein basic is only for looks? i have experienced way better respound and less body roll from the suspensions. I guess it might not be enough for track use but as a daily driver, it will give you a lot fun on corners and not a harsh ride. plus a set of stiffer sway bars, it will be a very good street car.

RB springs for looks? Seems to me they would be ideal for someone wanting to run a slighter stiffer setup vs. lowering for looks.
