taking off tires

taking off tires

Hey. guys, I'm changing my brake pads and I'm having issues removing the back tires. Any suggestions?

meaning your lugs aren't coming off, or the wheel is seized onto the hub?

Yea the lugs are off but the wheels stuck

Lots of different methods, im sure everyone has their own.... tried and true method is to remove the lug nuts, and soak the crap out of the lug seats with some wd-40 or pb blaster....come back in 30 mins and all should be well.

Although you could get more aggrestive and try the following:

1. Rubber mallet and a cloth .... pound behind the wheel, rotate, pound, rotate etc...
2. If you have a 2x4, place an end against the inside of the stuck wheel.... the other end will go to your scissor jack, with the back of the scissor jack against the other wheel ... slowly start to expand the jack until the wheel pops off.
3. With lugs removed, slowly lower the car, sometimes the weight placed on the wheel will pop it right off. Be sure not to drop the car down, and instead lower it slowly.

Lay on your back and alternately kick the front then back then front etc... of the wheel. Stuck wheels get off every time that way for me. Although since I've taken to sanding down the hub and wheel hub surface and coating them with a light layer of grease, I haven't had a rusting problem for them to get stuck (just keep the grease off the studs).

Lol well got the tires off. Soaked em. Ok new problem. The piston on the back break won't retract and I've drained the fluid. It's only the back, ive got the front two.

Are you using the brake piston "key"? It isn't a smooth cylinder, it's a "screw" that has to be turned back into the caliper.

OP got his tire off, but thought I would share one trick my father taught me and I've actually used before...
This is more for if you need to remove a wheel that is seized and you're in a situation where you don't have extra tools to improvise with (like on the side of the freeway).
1) Loosen lug nuts roughly 1/2" away from the wheel.
2) Get in the car, start it, and start moving.
3) SLAM on the brakes and listen for the wheel to "pop-off" the hub (remember the lugs are still installed so the wheel won't come off).
4) If you hear it pop-off, don't move the car anymore (obviously). If you don't hear it come off, then put it in reverse and try again. Repeat until its off.

Sounds crazy... but I had to do this once on my girlfriend's Mazda3 and it worked like a charm.
But I usually start with the "mule-kick" technique where I have my back towards the wheel and back-kick the tire on all sides.

And Jon, I wouldn't recommend this method at all. Sounds like a fantastic way to snap the wheel lugs as the wheel shifts and the load on the wheel is no longer evenly distributed across the lugs. I am not disputing that it works, because it clearly has for you, but it's playing russian roulette with your wheel hub.

I honestly don't care what you recommend...
A lot of methods I've learned are from "backyard mechanics" because that is what I've grown-up with.
But I'm thankful because its taught me how to improvise on a lot of things.
Unlike many on this forum who have done very little mechanical work on cars, yet think they have any right to open their mouth because its not "ideal".
These people are the reason I hardly ever post here anymore...

I didn't mean any offense Jon.


However, sometimes those that open their mouths (fingers) are speaking from experience, and "do their own wrenching" to the degree of doing their engine/transmission replacement (done on my Miata, clutch replacement on my 8 is under progress in my driveway). I've personally witnessed lugs snapping from vehicle load not evenly seated on the wheel due to loosened lug nuts.
