Why did mazda choose 225 width?

Why did they choose 225 over the 245 most here like to use. Just curious. Thanks.

you should be more concerned about commanding a soft landing …

"New to drifting"... "Need the rear to be able to break loose upon command"... "Mountain pass runs on the downhill"...

Tire width should be the least of your concerns.

Oh man. Bunch of dorks here. Nice header theory thread teamrx8.

Simplified my OP so I can get a better answer. Thanks

Who knows why Mazda decided something 18 years ago. Maybe it was a cost thing, maybe they needed to take into consideration aquaplaning risk.
225 is OK if you're using the right compound for the job. I dunno about "most" here, I didn't like 245 for road course all that much. Was it the size or the tire model? We'll never know. Drive it and see, there's no magic formula that works for all drivers for all circuits.

Also drop the attitude if you want help.

Lol I had no attitude in my OP. They flamed first. Trying to be funny. I actually thought it was funny tho 😆

Why didn't you like the 245s on the road course?

Loki 03-30-2022 06:28 PM

The 245s I had were Rivals. They were OK but felt.. sluggish in situations where I expected more response - trail braking and throttle steering. Went with 235 RS4s after and no regrets. Apples and oranges, but I think that's my point. Size is not an absolute and the question doesn't make sense as a result. Start somewhere and see what you want to improve.

If you're putting this on stock wheels that's another thing. I'm talking about tires on 17" race wheels, more sidewall, less weight. Your results might be completely different.

TeamRX8 03-30-2022 07:18 PM

trust me, it was barely even a flicker, let alone a flame. :suspect:

Yeah I was hoping to avoid the sluggish and less responsive feel you mention hence I don't want to go too wide or not even sure if I have to, but I see most go wider. I'm looking at some bronze ts-5 enkeis since I do not like the stock wheels and the previous owner painted them black and they are peeling all over.. initially wanted to stay with the stock size, but really like the look of the 245s. I haven't drove the car since I bought it with a blown motor a few weeks back and it's being rebuilt at the moment. The tires on it are bald hence I'm looking at a wheel and tire package and I can't really afford to be buying wheels every few years so I want to get the size right. I love the look of 18s(17 too small for body imo) and want a thicker width but want to keep the handling nimble if that makes sense. I know i can go wider on the stock wheel from what I've read, but I would be riding around on pillow sidewalls I would think lol. So if I do go wider, I will likely go for a 9 inch wheel width. Thought maybe guys can chime in who ran both stock size, and then ran a 245+ and what difference they felt. I'm sure the grip is better, but was the car still nimble?

Thanks for your suggestions. I also want to know whether the stock tire width good for the TOUGE and thanks to all of you for the answer.

Haha this thread made my day!
In my experience with stock wheels and tyres this combo is about right unless pushing the car hard.
When i went to 235/ 40 the car the car felt like it was on rails. So i never bothered with 245 as i think it would be over tyred for the amount if power on NA. FI probably a different story that i have no experience with. Also the 235/ 40 size is really common and therefore cheaper where i live anyway!

Probably would be better to go for an 8.5 width wheel for the 235s. I need new wheels anyway

XDragon8 04-09-2022 03:30 AM

Im on stock wheels. 235/40 tyre poke barely protects wheel lips. So the wheels dont get scratched when you lay a wheel on its side while checking brakes etc. Not the case for 225/ 45 which did scratch the wheels, just annoying when you make sure not to curb your wheels when driving! 😉

I hear ya but I'm looking to minimize sidewall flex in corners. Looking for scalpel like precision.

CharlesCutler 05-16-2022 08:05 AM

Same here.

I went with the 245s on an 8.5 width wheel. Seems the go to for most on these cars.

more like a butter knife choice than a scalpel though :squint: typical these days

Factory stock is 225 on 8”, but you talked about a scalpel and then your action equates it to 245; which is almost 1” wider that 225, on only a 1/2” wider wheel?

believe it or not, some people on here actually pay attention 🧐

I'm going by this chart pal.. looks like I got the right combo. Would like to minimize understeer from the stock narrow wheel/tire combo by going a little thicker. More grip = more precision. Also wouldn't want to put 245s on an 8 inch wheel and have all that extra sidewall mush hanging out. Less sidewall flex, more precision.

If you'd put the 235 tire on the 8.5 wheel you would had even more stretched tire on the contact surface, even more precision. A 245 tire would stretch nicely on a wider wheel.

Hmm I see what you're saying. Probably would have been better on a 9 inch wheel for the 245s.. oh well. Too late now. Probably not a significant difference anyway.

TeamRX8 05-23-2022 11:43 AM

I’ll revise that from a butter knife to some raw, unprocessed metal ore … :suspect:

TeamRX8 05-24-2022 11:52 AM

was going through some old files though and saw these pics from back in 2007 when I put SSR Comp-C 18x10.5+43 wheels with 265/35-18 tires on my RX8.

Don't cut yourself ... :suspect:
