Hey guys, I'm about to install my H&R springs onto my RX8 and I was wondering if I should cut the bump stop or not. Any experienced Tech's here that can help me out?

Not an experienced tech, but I have the H&R springs with Tokico shocks using the stock bump stops. I don't have any issues with bottoming out the car or noticing the bump stops at all. (Mind you, I don't try to get up to 60+mph and hit rail road tracks as hard as I can either.)

When I had the H&R's with the stock shocks there seemed to be far too much movement in the suspension travel and the bump stops may have been interfereing. But if they are interfereing, then they are doing their job to protect your shock.

The H&R's lower the car as much as I have seen any other RX-8, but I don't see any good reason to remove the bump stops for street use.

 

Racingbeat springs don't have much of a drop but they recommend modifying the bumpstops. Thanks to Raz's members website I easily found a picture of me holding the modified stop for your viewing pleasure.

Additionally if you put a small zip tie around the strut then go do some hard driving you can see how much play you have left in the strut. I noticed that under hard braking that I would have hit the stock bumpstop, but manage to miss it with the modified one.

 

Instructions don't specify? Tein s-techs said to cut it 1". Different amount of drop, though.

 

sorry i know nothing about suspension setups..

so what if you dont cut the bump stop when installing lowering springs?

 

if you dont cut them the car will hit them much faster in a bump....it will feel like you are slamming your car off the ground usually.....i cut mine about an inch too with the espelirs

 

I called H&R before installing mine and they told me NOT to cut the bumpstops.

 

I now have the Espelirs and haven't cut the bumpstops with these springs.

i figure since they are .75 inch higher up front then the H&Rs and have a higher spring rate it just didn't make sense to cut them.

 

Eibachs and Koni's here.....I cut my stops about 1 inch. No ill effects so far.

 

It's not just about lowering height. You also have to consider spring rate.

I'd leave the stops and cut them only if you run into issues with them.
