Scratched rotors

A mechanic friend dropped by my house today and checked out my new car and noticed scratches on all four rotors. I have about 60 miles on the car now and got it when it had 10 miles. The scratches aren't extremely deep, but the rotors aren't smooth either when you slide your finger across them.

He had his Honda mini-van with him and had me slide my fingers across his rotors, and I was surprised to feel how very smooth they were, and it already had thousands of miles on it.

I do sometimes hear some squeal from the front when I brake.

But anyways, my friend told me to go to Mazda and have my rotors replaced because he said they were defective.

I was wondering, are your rotors really smooth, or slightly scatched? I wonder if this is suppose to be normal.

if your car is that new, when you do brake, brake _hard_ and brake hard from various speeds. i had squeeling too, but it eventually went away. i brake pretty aggressively and autox a lot so the rotors were bedded by the pads and all was well. the squeeling will go away as the rotors bed in and the rotors should get more smooth. i can take pics of my rotors if you'd like an illustration. also, rx-8 pads are prolly a _wee_ bit more aggressive than mini-van pads.

I have the same situation with my brake rotors. My mazda dealer told me that there are absolutely no problem with these rotors.

I take my car to track days and I didn't notice any problem (yet)

But I'd like to know why they are so

Mine look like that as well. Even I have 15K miles on it.

Dont worry as far as I know its ok. Your friend obviously never had a sports car before. although 8's pads suck ***, but its still alot better than most "normal" car pads (say, your friend's mini-van, and most sedans)

I know he doesn't really work on "sports" car. So, I thought I ask here and see if it was normal on this type of car. I guess I'll take Shinronin's advice and see if it smooth things out.

Every car that I have owned with disc brakes have had circumferential grooves in the rotors after use.

I wouldn't sweat it.

I would paint the rotor housing before they rust.

It's easy to do your self. Check the DYI thread.

Good time to paint calipers too.
