"Thanks for all of that info, and I'm sorry about you failing first grade English class"

i dont understand that part.....

yeah i sorta knew about the trucks layouts and 4wd.....i just wanted to make it sound really hard to do the awd switch in an 8 for the guy

good points nonetheless bro!
ii live in pa and when it snows i let it sit in the driveway and i let someone drive me to work. i avoid crashing, ice, gas consumption, salt rusting my car, and it adds another day my azenis rt 615s keep some treadlife.....

How do you like your RT615's? I'm looking at either those, Kuhmo V710's, or Nitto NT01's for track tires.

I'm having a hard time picturing this. On other longitudally 4WD setups the engine is mounted a lot more forward then the Renny. The RX-8 is a front/mid-engine car afterall. With the motor mounted so far back and low (relative to other longitudinal 4WDs) I can't see how you'd get power to the front wheels without relocting the engine.

edited: 'cause I'm an idiot and wrote "transverse" when I wanted to say "longitudinal"

You couldn't do it as a transverse. (side to side). It could only be done as a longitudal (front to back) setup. I'd draw you a picture on a napkin, but that wouldn't do us any good over the net.

Just picture, from front to back: Engine, Transmission, Transfer Case, Driveshaft. The transfer case has a gear with a chain on in running to another gear to the side of it. This gear spins the driveshaft that is directed towards the front of the vehicle. Got it?

BTW, I am also the proud father of a Lab. A Yellow, 2 y/o giant one named Bailey, that I refer to as Moose. He weighs in at about 95lbs.

My bad. I ment to say I can't picture it mounted longitudinally with the motor in the stock location. I'm a former WRX owner (and Porsche 944 Turbo, MR-2 Turbo and SE-R) so I understand how a longitudinal AWD setup looks like. The RX-8 motor is located down and back; due to it's small size it can be placed optimally for balance. If you look at the front wheels from the side and imagine axels to power it, the front differential would be where the motor currently resides.

BTW, Labs are great dogs. Mine are both female (my bitches ) and are named "Happy" and "Joy". They are great with my 1 year old son. :D

Can't say it better myself MadRonin. I drove in friday's mess as well with little to no problem. It was definitely the worst road conditions of the season. I have lm-22 blizzaks on 17" rims it cost me about 1200 total including the TPMS sensors, shipping, tax, mounting. I used to drive a ford escort zx2 which was decent in the snow but i feel more confident driving my rx8 with snows on then that fwd car. except for the clearance that is an issue with massive chunks of ice on the ground.

I really don't see any need in putting awd onto our car. It handles well when the car does get loose its very predictable because of the 50/50 distribution. Driving around in snow i don't really remember my front tires ever coming loose except maybe once or twice and that was either on pure ice or me having fun.

Just get a beater or a set of snow tires.

The stock tires that comes with the 8 are summer tires. They're not meant to be driven in the cold or snow or ice. I believe the manual even says as much.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a decent set of 17" wheels and some good snow tires and be safe. AWD drive sounds like a good idea, but it really isn't. Our cars handle phenomenally. Why would you want to ruin that?

I had a thought...would it be possible to take the CX-7 AWD setup and mod it for the RX-8 (maybe even the Subaru)? Now, I know its a big project, so my question to you is, can it be done, and if so, what kind of work are we talking about; i.e. would there be a lot of fab work or is something that i can switch out in a weekend without doing much welding or heavy mod work?

thanks for your time guys!

Keith

Can be done but is so much work money and time
