Had my 8 for a month. Noticed rust circling the inside of my back rims on both sides. I have scheduled a service visit this coming Tuesday. Anybody have this problem? Any suggestions/remedies?

 

Could be from the weights used to balance the rims, are the type of wheel weights similar on the front and back and if so is there any rust on the fronts?

 

Good thought, but I just had the stock wheels chromed, and it was doing it before, and after the wheel change. Plus, I would see if the lead weights were rusting. I don't think lead rusts anyway?

 

No, lead doesn't rust. What you're likely seeing is road grime. I have the same thing... washes right off.

 

No Omi, it is definitely rust. I think it is coming from the axle hub. Well, we will see Tuesday. Just thought someone else may have had this problem. Thanks.

 

I always see rust on my rotors after I wash it or they get wet. Maybe it is dripping off your rotors onto your wheels??? I waxed the inside on my rims. Makes it easier to clean and I havent seen any rust on my rims.

 

What you are seeing is rust that comes out of the brake rotors.

Water goes into the slot in the rotors between its faces. The rotors are iron, so this water immediately forms rust that sprays out of the rotor as soon as you drive the car. It then covers the inside of the rims in a circle that is inline with the rotor edges.

Its an even bigger PITA with my Ray's because of the polished surface and the deep groove in the center of the rim.

 

Nope. Not rotor rust. It is coming from behind the rotor. I suspect a problem inside the axle. I will post what the problem was when service fixes it.

Brake and rotor dust gets EVERYWHERE. What these guys are saying about rust coming from the rotor is possible, you will get more "rusty" looking stuff all around the wheel area from the rotor and brake dust getting everywhere, and then getting wet or picking up moisture from the air.

If you feel you want to have it checked out, then by all means do so. But if there is an issue with the axle or something, you will more likely find grease flung around, not rust.

water gets in the hub and flings out onto the wheel causing circles. take a rag and wipe it off no problem. oddly enough, only one of my wheels does this

 

Sputnik and the other guys are correct. Its rust from the rotors...you will especially notice it after some rain. It does comes off easily however, do a coat of zaino on your rims...works great!

The rust is definitley from the rotors. My rotors build up a thin layer of rust after washing and as you drive, brake and wears off, it will spin off inside the rim. Just use a long brush when washing your wheels and it will come right off with soap and water. No service at the dealer needed.
