question about thicker tires

Hello everyone iv been reading this forum for a while now and finally registered, i have a question about tires, i dont know to much about sizes, but right now i own a set of some 235/35/19 on some konig sideways, they are just about shot and its time for new tires, thing is i have hit a few pot holes witch dented my rim a bit not enough for it to be noticable on the road and still keeps the air in, but i was wondering if i could get some thicker tires so its not so low pro and what size would i have to get that would fit?

thanks
Alex.

Also; i know its in the wrong section but i have been looking for a mazda speed front bumper, but cant seem to find any that havent been painted or are close to costing 2,000. if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be helpfull, because one of my family members has a body shop that could paint the bumper for me cheap.....

thanks again.

You obviously want a higher aspect ratio and of course given 19" rims you're somewhat limited in terms of how much sidewall height you can gain.

Mazda engineers chose 225x45x18 stock as the best mix of performance and ride quality for the RX-8. The 2009 R3 comes with 19" rims and 225x40 tires, but it is expected that the consumer realizes this version will have somewhat poorer street ride quality in favor of somewhat better performance (better turn-in response) and [in the eyes of some] better looks.

So, you could follow the R3 design and go with 225x40x19. Any wider tread width at 40 aspect ratio on 19" rims might rub.

ok, i see what your saying, im also going to get suspention as soon as this snow ments aloong with the new tires, if i stayed with the 235/35/19 and got springs would it rub? couldnt i get mt fenders bent in also? and if i say did do that would it be enough to get the 235/40 and suspention?

Yes, you can "roll" your fenders to get wider tread width in some instances. But your original concern was sidewall height (aspect ratio) so as to provide a bit more [tire] shock absorption and thereby somewhat lessen impact of road irregularities.

I really wouldn't do anything different at this point. I presume you like your 19" rims and your current tread width. A pothole will get you whether you have 45x18 or 35x19. I pothole-bent a 17" rim a number of years ago; just one of those unseen, unlucky, adversities.

Everyone has their own preferences, and of course cost tolerance, but I like (in no particular order) the following Summer Extreme/Max/Ultra tires. All a bit on the pricey side (Kumho least $'s), but your '8 is a sportscar after all and worth it.

Note: I don't personally like Bridgestone and feel Pirelli is overpriced.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Toyo Proxes T1R
Falken FK-452
Michelin Pilot Sport 2
Kumho ECSTA MX, SPT or XS
Dunlop 8090 (stock on my '05)
Dunlop Direzza Z1

Others will have to inform on the bumper/sideskirt as I'm a mostly stock kinda guy.

edit: Tirerack.com has a nice comparative guide as well as extensive user feedback.

Oh, and my next set will be Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. I like Goodyear, this one is top rated dry/wet traction and ride, and it has a rim lip that should cover some minor curb rash on a couple of my wheels.
