OEM Wheel Widening
 

Along with my project located https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/rear-fi-daily-driver-project-187851/

now i need to find 2 used rims for the test of cutting out the backside and adding 25mm or more to have the factory wheels hold larger rubber..
but shipping two nice rims out to here may be more then i can bargan for...
ill see if i can find my oem rims from the wreaked one in 2007 but i doubt it.

i may have to sacrifice my own wheels.
or go even more expensive and buy 4 and send them to either of the following (rating heighest to lowest)

if i have an unlowered (oem hight) with oem wheels with a +25mm spacer how much can i add to the oem rim before clearances are an issue? (obiously more then 25mm) basically i wanna fit 275-295s where-ever i can.:eek:

There are guys fitting 295 Hoosier A6's and Kumho V710's on the OEM rims. Granted, their installers hate them, but they didn't have to do anything special to the structure of the wheels to do it.

Well jamming a huge tire on a narrow wheel is going to affect your sidewall alignment and contact patch. I don't know how much, but it'd be interesting to see the wear pattern on the 295s that are run on stock wheel width rather than something like a 10".

agreed, no tread width should be more then 10% wider than the rim or the vehicle will have a floating feeling and sidewall movement will make it very interesting in turns.
the oem rim should not have anything more then a 245

OK so I'm not sure if your question has been answered yet but I believe you are looking for this response:

Stock Wheel 18x8 +50

Personally I think a 285/30 is probably the maximum you can do under the stock rolled fenders but I could be wrong. Regardless you want a 10" wide wheel to optimize that tire section width.

So you need to add 2" to your stock 8" wheel = 10". These companies can obviously only add to the inner barrel of the wheel so you're increasing offset dramatically. Once they add those 2" to your wheel you will end up with a

18x10 +75 offset

Now you want to get that back to the +45 area with that tire size. So you would need a

30mm spacer ideally.

I PERSONALLY DON'T THINK IT'S WORTH IT. I can get you some much lighter wheel setup that doesn't require 2lb spacers to acheive what you want for around $1300.00.

Am I missing something, why would you want to end up with an inferior wheel that's gonna end up real heavy when there are lightweight options at the same cost?

If the stock rim is 18x8 with +50,and you add 2", would you not end up with 18x10 +100 .Maybe we do math different here :)

well, if they cut directly down the center of the rim at +0, adding 2 inches would only add 25 mm to the offset.

the work to make this work is not worth it, imo.

So Offset is always measured from the CENTERLINE OF THE WHEEL = +0 offset.

For arbitrary purposes we'll say:

18x8 +50 has 2" Front spacing and 6" backspacing.

Now we add 2" of backspacing to get 10".

2" FS
8" BS

Centerline is at 5". That's 3" difference ~ 75mm.

If we really wanted to complicate things more: hehe.

A 8" wide wheel is actually 9" wide from edge to edge, total spacing.

10" is 11" Wide in total spacing. You see the pattern.

This can become a problem when people are actually "DERIVING" their fitment from "SCRATCH".

The laymen would measure inside of fender to inner most part of the vehicle and assume, OH i have 10" of room so I can get a 10" wide wheel and then begin determining offset.

The problem is when he gets his 10" wheel and it's actually 11" wide from outer edge to outer edge, he will end up using a half inch spacer. I've seen this happen many times.

OH AND I'VE SEEN WELDCRAFT NOT MAKE ALL THE WHEELS THE SAME WIDTH SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE VERY EXPLICIT.

SAY HOW MUCH MORE MATERIAL YOU WANT ADDED, NEVER HOW WIDE YOU WANT THE WHEEL TO BE IN THE END. THIS IS DUE TO WHAT I STATED ABOVE.

If you know your wheel is 8" and you want a 10" wide wheel you must ask for 2" of more material or barrel OR Say you want a wheel with 11" of TOTAL SPACING from outer to outer edge.

the reason being that the only wheels i like for the rx8 are the oems, momo v10s and lorinsers lm6 (see attached)
yet all of these are 8 to 8.5 wide to my understanding
and 19/20 will be wreaked in the uae ina day
plus shipping costs would make the rims cost over 3k each (for the lorinser)

no i havent yet.
ive been running around too much, kids, kids school, relocating near to the kids school.
and too much over time at work.
give me the details and ill probibly end up sending them out.
ill probibly discuss with them weight reduction ideas like drilling out some of the oem material thats not needed etc.

10.5 +43 fits under the fenderwells without mods, you might have to flatten the rear lip depending on the tire size

265's fit with no rubbing and no modifications.

Team, what were the widest tires you put on those wheels? 275's? i'm thinking about bumping up next time i get tires. or, is it even worth it to bump up?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you havent even seen the beginning of the aftermarket wheel scene. Go to VividRacing and scroll through the hundreds of wheels. You're bound to find some wheels that look good in your opinion.
