how durable is spray painting like this? i want to go black like in the op's first pic and i was set on powder coating, but this obviously is cheaper. i'm assuming powder coating is more durable than just spray painting but is it worth the extra $? i have another problem; my wheels are chrome so i need to have someone de-chrome them first...

automotive paint and clear coat works fine for wheels...it's the same process as painting body panels

I spray many wheels at work. I uses a minimum of 3 coats of clear on them. I'm tossing around the idea of painting my wheels matte black. I have a matte clear coat I can apply that offers just as much protection as normal clear.

Powder coating probably will last longer however.

so do you guys remove the tires when you do this or just carefully mask 'em?

that might have been a really stupid question...

not stupid at all. I have done them with just masking the tires off. You just have to make sure you scuff up the edge good so it won't peel. Also we have done it were you just break the bead of the tire instead of taking the tire all the way off. Of course the best way is to do it without the tire at all. But from my experience, if you prep the wheel correctly, you can leave the tire on.

Believe it or not I STILL have no finished painting them. I was going to do it this past week but it has been raining non-stop so I couldn't

If the weather is good in the next few days I'm going to try finishing the up.

I have although been contemplating going back to all matte black since they were so easy to keep 'clean'

This is how the car sits right now.

ILOVEFI,

Sorry man not trying to be an *** but you have to paint your wheels so they match!! Get some black lugs no matter which color you choose.
