I recently had my passenger rear blow out (at 4 am mind you). Original tires and I have 50k on my car so they were due. Since our lovely car doesn't come with a spare I had to take only the 1 blown tire/wheel to Discount Tire and "they only one they had in stock" was the BFG at ~$188 ($242.00 mounted, warranty... etc).

Went home then decided that instead of buying only 1 other tire for the driver rear at the same price ($500 = 2 tires) ... that I'd buy 4 news ones instead. Returned the BFG and went with the Kumho SPT.

Kumho SPT = $123/each currently at discount tire.

Paid about $650 for all 4 installed with warranty, the works.

I second the Kumho SPT recommendation above. I'd also look into the new Sumitomo HTRZ III, I think Tirerack just got 'em in. I had the HTRZ II for ~22K miles on a previous car and they were very decent and inexpensive. not sure what exact improvements the v.III offers, but at those prices you can't really lose.

 

Are the Kuhmo SPT's all season or Performance summer?

Anyone have any cost effective suggestions for all sason tires?

I may be driving to Wisconsin soon and I will need something that can handle rain and a bit of Snow.

 

I run Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s on my BMW. (RX-8 is next.) I'm at about 30k miles on them now, and expect to get about 50k at the wear rate I'm seeing. Even though they are expensive up front, that's really not very expensive on a cents-per-mile basis. They are smooth and quiet, work awesome in the dry and the wet. I rail every ramp that's not loaded with traffic, but I have close to zero toe and moderate camber (1.5 front, -2 rear, if I remember right). I'll definitely be putting a set on my 8 when I get it.

I happen to like the Michelin/BFG lineups a lot. I'd go with g-Force Sport or KDW if you're looking for something less expensive.

+1 on the g-force KDW for street/rain tires. They're not snow tires though. If you're going to be driving in the snow I would recommend getting a full set of snow tires. I have the Dunlop M3 Sp wintersports. They're decent snow tires that still have good dry pavement traction and control.

 

i cant afford (at least for such an random event like snow) multiple sets of tires and rims right now, and i know very little about tires. i live in maryland so i need something that is at least acceptable in snow, but has good enough traction to handle the driving of a 20 year old. (on a closed circuit of course.)

i was looking at ebay and i saw mazda 3 rims at about $150 each, however. are there really cheap (no more than $50) rims for the winter?

 

i am changing mines with the continental sport contact 3. 984 euros the 4...

I would check out tirerack.com and see what they have for rim and tire combos. You can usually get a full set of rims and tires for ~$1200 already mounted and balanced, which is a heck of a deal when you include mounting and balancing.

You may be better off with some lower performance all seasons. Don't expect to take them to the track but they'll get you around well enough on the street until you're making more money. I was very satisfied with Pirelli P9000's when I had those on my VW. Check them out.

 

I never buy tires with warranty, what do the warranty usually cover?

 

Road hazards, pretty much anything that will pop your tire. Anyone have any experience with those pole position s03's that are on sale at tire rack?
