I have had my 2004 8 for about 18 months and I just took it to my dealer (Tom Bush Mazda in Jacksonville, FL and they had no issues with painting my rotors. In fact while they were in the process of doing the work, the technician went ahead and replaced my brake pads as well for no charge.

oh hey wsup long time. they said it won't do anything and it isnt in their computer. since this was a MRI and not a TSB where they can see it pop up. its not a big deal but i did want it to get it painted.

Hey, Magellen, have you been able to get this work done? If so, which dealership did you take it to? I'm from Mpls as well, and I'd like to have the problem taken care of, too! Mine is an '05 with 4K miles and the rotor is already very rusted!!

What is an "ESI search" ? And although I believe someone got work done on a 2005 RX8 in this thread the provided MRI only states it is good for a 2004 RX8. Has there been an update to include 2005 RX8 ?

MY dealership in KC replaced my front rotors and painted the hubs of all 4 rotors in addition to painting the calipers. the paint on the hubs is holding up well but the calipers are not fairing so well. Half of the paint has come off and looks worse than before. In addition, the painting of the rotor hubs does nothing for the even bigger problem, the rust i n the rotor vanes that spewing rust water everywhere when wet. Nothing worse than cleaning nice wheels and drive off and a rust ring appearing.

I can't take this rust issue anymore and I'm now in the process of ridding myself of this problem. 3 Step process here:

1. Replace rotors with zinc or e-coated rotors (this takes care of the hub and vanes).
2. Powercoat the calipers.
3. Buy new backplates and powder coat them as well.
4. Replace brake pads and brake lines to round out the process.

I might be the '05 you were referring to. I didn't take any print outs or anything in with me when I asked about the rotors. I just mentioned it to the service manager and he said they'd take care of it under warranty. I'm sure this isn't the rule when it comes to service dept's. One may do it while another might not. Just depends I guess. If they've got any other 8's on the lot walk over and take a look at their rotors. If you see they are rusty as well you might be able to convince them to fix it by bring up that fact. May or may not work but if you really don't want to do them yourself then it's worth a shot. :)

Just got mine back from the dealership today with just a hair over 10,000 miles on the car they did the work for me and I had never been to this dealership before becauset it's out of town for me. Brown's Mazda in Fairfax VA. They also did the slow start recall and my car runs WAY smoother now. Now I just get the chance to wash my car tommorow and I'll be good to go. Here's a tip. If they don't guarantee they are going to do the rotors when you drop the car off, leave the bulletin on the passenger seat (helps if the rest of the car is clean). Then somehow miraculously when they have the car they *FIND* the MRI or whatever it was. It's a good job to get done, they look 1000 times better.

I bought my 8 in November of 04 and mine were just starting to rust a little so I painted the rotor, calipers and back plate. I used black caliper paint and I put like 6 coates and they still look good.

UPDATE: I talked to my dealership last week about my brake rust problems and I was told by the service manager to bring the car in so they can look at it and take pics to send them on to Mazda to see how they want to address my concerns. The dealer took pics of the calipers and rotors and told me they were going to speak to the district rep and get back with me this week.



They called me today and told me that Mazda had authorized them to replace my rotors with the new ones from the ’06 model. These are supposed to have a coating on the rotor hub and the fins are supposed to be coated as well.



I informed the service manger that is was only one of the issues I had with the rust problem. There still is the rust from the calipers as well as the back plates. I told him that I had a plan to resolve this myself with the powder coating of the calipers and back plate and the addition of zinc/e-coated rotors. I also explained to him my dilemma about getting my set of calipers powder coated but needing someone to take my calipers off and house my car while this work was done. He verbally agreed to do this work for me since I was willing to spend the $$ to get the calipers powder coated. He wanted to talk this over with Mazda as well, so I was told he would call me back when he knew something.



2 hours go by and I get a call back from the service manager with good news. Mazda has not only agreed to replace the rotors (4), but all calipers (the new ones from the ’06 – rust treated ones), and the new styled backing plates (treated as well). The dealership is in the process of ordering all the parts and I will schedule an appointment for next week to look over these new parts.



Mazda had issue with the powder coating of the calipers due to the complete tear down of the calipers and possible failure due to improper prep work during the powder coat process. Mazda didn’t want the dealer or themselves liable for this the calipers.



The crazy part about this is that I started ordering all the parts I would need to powder coat my calipers and back plates, replace my pads and to replace my rotors with cross drilled/slotted ones. I have canceled the orders I could, but I still have the new rotors on their way with the Axxis ult pads. If the new dealer rotors aren’t up to snuff I will just have the other rotors installed.



I will take pics of all the new parts with part #’s so others can get the process going at their dealerships.

i got mine painted yesterday along w/ my 12k mile service... the silver paint isn't the nicest looking but its definitely nicer than having all that rust on there...

My dealer sux. I went in for an oil change and mentioned the rusted rotors, which look pretty bad. He said he'd look into it. When I got my car back, he didn't even mention the rotors at all, but my oil change was free...wtf?

I hate having to argue with people. They should just do what's right the first time :-/

I just got mine painted on my 05 at Fitzgerald in Frederick, MD. When I went in for my first oil change when I had about 500 miles on the car I mentioned it and they said they wouldn't do anything.
This time around I mentioned the ESI search, the service manager was nice and said he would try to look it up but they haven't ever covered this in the past. He looked it up (same one that was posted here but from mazdas site) Called his regional manager to do a CYA I suppose and then took care of the problem for me.

They did a really good job and used a high quality paint. Only thing that ticked me off is they got some of the paint on my red calipers =\ but in about 10minutes I had that fixed myself.

The silver looks way better than the bare metal did even without the rust.

Is there a milage cap or year cap on this issue, i just bought a "new to me" 2004 and have this issue, are they going to give me crap about not being the original owner, thanks in advance

I saw today on my new 06 that I have the rust problem, too, so I am going to tell them about it when I am getting a key programmed.

im at rosenthal right now, but i cant find the ACTUAL TSB. not the dubious "copy/paste" snap-on posted.

does anyone have the TSB? i'd need the actual tsb for them to do the work.

I'm sorry but "rust on the rotors"? The rotors are in the engine and you certainly wouldn't paint them.
Could you explain what you mean? I have been maintaining cars for well over 35 years and this has really puzzled me.

Oh right! Well the company that invented disc brakes called them discs. However what part did they have to re-paint?

Calling brake discs "rotors" will cause confusion, especially on a site devoted to a car with a Rotary engine!

In all the car Workshop handbooks I have - quite a few American as well, not one refers to "Brake Rotors" it is always "Brake disks".
