If i couldn't get Toyo's T1R's , what would you guys suggest?
 

Its time for me to replace the back tires on my RX-8, currently running the Toyo T1R's. I am happy with the Toyo's , but i know there are other brands that you guys like, that i may consider.

I am looking for a tire that has these qualities from highest to lowest priority.

Low Tread wear
Grip
Wet traction
Tire Noise

My current tires last me a full year which i was really surprised with all the highway driving i do. I put 41k miles on them,the front still have good tread life left in them and probally won't have to change them out till this fall. The only negative feed back i have with the T1R's is that tire noise increases as towards the end of the tire life. During highway speeds you barely notice it, driving i around town its loud .


So what are your choices of tires that may meet my standards.

if the car sees little to no track time I know people that have been very happy with BFg KDWII's for goot wet/dry traction.

look into Kumho tires, they've got some good ones. I have the MX's (which I will admit are a bit overkill since I dont' autocross) but the STP's are very good as well.

Putting that many miles on, I have also heard good things about Kuhmo- nice quality for a nice price. Important if you are gonna be buying tires once a year. I have Toyo T1R and have heard enough good that I think I will do Kuhmo next time.

rotate the tires! so you don't have to replace just the rears.

FWIW, I just purchased Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions in stock size on closeout sale at TireRack for $129/pop. Lots of good reviews, but I haven't put 'em on yet.

I was SOOOOO tempted to get some of those! Just bummed I couldn't get them in 245. :( Let us know how they work out for ya...

I've had my Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Positions for about 3 months now and I really like them in both dry and wet conditions. Freezing remps aren't an issue in Florida, so I can run these all year.

no if u wanna a good tire that rivals the potenza that came stock on the 8's with more milage u can get look up the Yokohama Advan A048........bad ass fuckin tires. highly recommended.

Yeah, I decided to maximize responsiveness and stick with 225's (on the stock rim)... will let you know how they work out.

the kumho spt is great.. and you can pick you size... btw. great in the rain..

I dunno about T1R, but Toyo Proxes4 Freaking SUCK !

I am running a staggered setup, so i can't rotate the tires. 245/35/19's up front, 265/30/19's in the rear.

Jedi, how many miles where you able to put on your Kuhmos? I had a set of Kuhmo's on my 2k2 Maxima and they were horrible. The only good thing about them were the price of $89 bucks a tire.

I want to go with Nitto's but the cost is almost 300 bucks a tire for the rear.

I still have a week left to make up my mind, but i thank you guys for your input on other tire brands.

11K on the Kumhos so far and they still rock.

Or if you want an all season version, go with teh Yokohama Avid W4S. Inly had them on a few weeks, b ut already like it better than stock bridgestones or dunlops (I've had both).

They're pretty new, so good luck getting good reviews on them. I might be the first to review on tirerack...

Kumho SPT's Do not get MX's they are for hard core driving.

I have the nitto nt555 extreme zr's and I like them but I am also considering a different brand.
I also don't know where u get ur tires but check out this link http://www.tires-easy.com/start.html most of the time I can't find anybody cheaper on the nittos and a lot of other brands.
Once you decide on the tire, call your local discount tire shop and try to make them match the price but include mounting and balancing, my local discount tire did it for my 2nd set of rears that I'm on now.

Wow thanks for the link.... looks like i will be going with the Toyo Proxes 4. A little cheaper than the T1R's, has everything that the T1R's have minus the higher top speed potential (186mph vs 168 mph). Like my RX-8 sees those speeds anyway :rolleyes:

The Proxes does have the advantange in the dry handeling department according to the chart. I''ll sacrafice top speed for more grip anyday!:)

The Pole's certainly do rate very high for Max Performance Summer use. Would you rate them as good/better in rain than the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's? The Tirerack forums are a bit confusing on this.

SPT's and 452 are both good tires!
