I've just installed my new slotted brake rotors, in accordance with the "R" and the "L" markings from them. The result is shown below (Photo 1). As you can see, the slots are oriented from the outside of the wheel to the inside.

But most of the slotted rotors I saw on other cars had the slots oriented from the inside to the outside ! (Photo 2). I donn't know what the functional difference is... if there is one. Any opinions ?

 

the slots need to be oriented they direction specified by the manufacturer. some point one way, some point the other

I mean I see exotic cars and high end cars all the time in my hood and I see then go both ways lol that sounds odd. Anywayz...

 

I'm not sure the direction makes much difference with the slots (unlike curved vanes where the direction is important), what's probably most important is that on both wheels the slots are pointing the same relative to wheel spin which requires a different left and right rotor.

 

It's usually determined by the vanes INSIDE the disc - if they curve they should be aligned so that they'throw air out' rather than the outside leading edge 'grabbing' the air - if you get my drift....

...so you say it should be like pic 1 or pic 2 ? I get your drift, just can't imagine which position 'could through air out' more than another.

Off Topic: In picture 2 it's a Mercedes SL63 AMG. I had the pleasure today only to rev the engine to 6000 RPM (wasn't allowed to drive it even a little), but man, I tell you, the car was literally and visibly trembling ! Almost as much as I did

 

That's why I hate R and L when regards to working on the car... Is R and L in regards to looking at the car, or looking from the car.... I think it'd be better if they used driver side/pass side...
