I installed a new set of Hawk HPS brake pads on the rear of my 8 last weekend and have since noticed a considerable noise increase from them over stock. I did take them off and add some "Disc Brake Quiet" from AutoZone between the pads and the calipers but that hasn't seemed to help. One question I did have was about the shims that where on the stock pads. The Hawk pads had what looked to me to be shims built onto the pads so I didn't bother reinstalling the stock shims, and don't even know if they will go on over the Hawks. Anyone else install these pads that can tell me?

If you don't reinstall the stock shims how do you get these suckers to quiet down some (aside from removal).

every single car i've been in with hawk HPS pads have squeaked. gotta sacrifice noise for performance. vice versa.

The OEM’s & the Hawks do not require anti-squeal and the Hawks do not need to use the OEM shims. If you look at the photo on the left are the OEM shims, OEM pads in the middle and Hawk HPS on the right. The outer pad is up top and the inner pad on the bottom. The photo is not the best, but you can see the ‘ shim like’ material already attached to the back of the Hawk’s and the two circled studs (on all four Hawk pads fyi) prevent the OEM outer shims from being used. I only use the Hawk’s on track weekends and do not notice any excessive squeal.

I'd imagine if you where just using them for the track then you might not notice any real noise from them. I don't when I happen to brake hard with them. When I do notice it is when coming to a slower stop. Then when taking off you can hear a squeal from then up to 10 mph or so. I had inspected them when I first heard it to be sure they where installed correctly and it appears so.

Too bad really, I bought into the "Virtually noise-free" and "Extremely low dust" claims when I ordered them from Rosenthal's online shop.

I used HPS pads on my last car. They squeaked a lot at the beginning, but it got better over time. However, other people who've used them say that it didn't get any better for them, so I guess I got lucky.

One thing that they were bad for the entire time I had them was dust. I was washing my wheels every week, and by that time they were always really disgusting.

Have them on my car for everyday driving. No squeaks.
