Great styling, great road feel, and low, low price.
Hope the mileage is good too.

I have them on mine.....they seem to have lost a some dry road grip over the last 10,000 miles. That said......there is hardly any tread wear and wet traction is great! Pretty descent tire for the money.

When I put my Kumho ECSTA SPT on my 8, these weren't around. I think a good bargain competitor to the SPT. From TireRack user survey, rates higher than the SPT and better treadlife. Look like a great tire for a bargain price.

agreed. I ran these before my current wheels and found it to be a great street tire. Great wear level and very decent dry/wet traction considering the cost and wear level.
Probably will go back to these when my current tires are done.

I've had my Generals for over a year now. The improvement over OEM was huge. I love them for summers and wet traction.
I, however, autocrossed with them a few times... the softer sidewall and tread compound make for a poor autocross tire. So, if you just like to play around on the twisties on the weekend, its still a great tire, but if you're going to really push them, the "bargain tire" makes itself known.

Yeah, I would never put these Kumho and General tires in the hardcore category. I think you need to go up a category to TireRack's max perf summer tires to get good autocross tires.
These fall into the next category down which target a good mix of daily driving liveability with weekend fun characteristics.

I also have a set of General Exclaim UHP in 245/45/19 and 275/30/19. I initially bought them because they fit my strained budget at the time (I had bought new rims) but I think they turned out to be a great value. I certainly don't think I need a better performing tire for my neck of the woods, street driving.
FYI The latest issue of Car and Driver features a bargain Tire Test that uses Tire Rack's BMWs and selection of tires. They didn't get a General Exclaim UHP into the mix but here are the results:
9. Ling Long L688
8. Nitto Invo
7. Falken Azenis RT-615
6. Yokohama S.Drive
5. BF Goodrich G-force KDW
4. Bridgestone Potenza RE760
3. Kumho Ecsta XS
2. Hankook Ventus V12 Evo
1. Dunlop Star Spec

I absolutely despise my General tires. Yeah, they are cheap, but they have no grip at all and I can feel the sidewalls folding when I take a hard corner. This is actually the first tire (besides the ones on my 200SX, but that's an economy car with economy tires) I have ever been to the extreme limits just driving around town. I have always disliked the Fuzion ZRi tires that were on my Z for a while, but I dislike these tires even more.
But, like said, if all you do is drive around on the street and you don't care as much for grip as you do for tire longevity, than I guess these tires are alright. I personally, as an avid auto-x and track day attendee, expect more out of my tires and I am getting new tires put on the 8 as soon as I can, even though my General tires still are almost brand new.

Ideally though, unless you are in a street tire indexed class, you should have a set of street tires for the street and a set of race tires for auto-x.

Agreed. But even for the street, I personally want something with more grip than the Generals offer. If I do end up competitively auto-x'ing the 8, I will get race tires for it so I can be competitive in B Stock. Right now, I regionaly compete in my Z in ESP and I am using Bridgestone RE-01R's, and I love them. They offer the most amount of grip out of any street tire I have raced on. I am still beating a Trans-Am with race tires and a Z28 with race tires, although, they are becoming better drivers and they should start beating me soon, unless I get race tires for the Z again.

you cant possibly you the potential of the re 01s on the street.
i am running a set of star specs right now that i have about 9 track days on. they are also my daily drivers.. i have a set of re 01s mounted to my new track wheels...
the potential for either of those tires should never be used on the street..
nice to have, yes. needed.
not really..
i have a set of older kumho spt going back on my street wheels as soon as i wear the star specs out..

I didn't say I needed the grip level of the RE-01R's on the street, but something more than the General's offer. Pretty much in between the General's and RE-01R's is what I want for a street tire. Something like Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions or just the regular RE050A's would be fine. But I will probably end up getting the new Sumitomo HTR Z III's since Tire Rack did a test with those and said they are every bit as good as the Pole Positions. I used a set of Pole Positions at a couple track days and loved them.
and it is not intended at you.. if you think you can use a well made summer tire. something like a 300a treadware rating on the street to its upper level. you are a fool and risking other lives around you..
it is that simple..
sure you can have the the most greatest bestest tire ever. but you are on the street.. simple.
if you have to do both, well the star specs rock.. the 01 rs and going to be great on the track..
but for the street they are both over kill..
and yes i do agree, if you are going to do track days / auto x. the tires are part of the fun.. and they can do both..
but if you dont.. you are pissing away money on my tire is better than yours..
just my opinion, i could be wrong..

I totally agree. If you have a "max performance summer" tire and are pushing it to the limits on the street, you are definitely going too fast. I don't go around racing everywhere, but I also don't drive like a grandma everywhere. I would say the hardest I ever go on the street is probably about 6/10ths, and that 6/10ths is pushing the General's to the limit. Yeah, technically, the Generals would work fine, but I rather have a better tire that won't be at its limits. I don't plan on getting some good summer tires and pushing them to the limits, I plan on getting good summer tires so I don't ever have to push them to the limits.
i will say the i have driven the kumho spt on the track.. hard..
and even at its, 6/10ths limit. i think at its 300 tread wear.. i on the street would never come close to its limits.. common sense.. natural selection!
the limits of the 300 tread wear tires far exceed most peoples ability on the track much less the street. including my own..
just saying.
i have been driving the star specs on the street for i think about 10 k miles. plus ~ 9 track days..
well the street time was wasted rubber.. and that gets back to separate street and track tires.

The General's will last longer. But will give up some, in the grip department, to the Star Spec's. They are two differnet classes of tires. The Star Spec's being Extreme Performance Summer and the General's are a lesser Ultra High Performance Summer (2 steps down in grip).
