Coilover Opinions

In the market for coilovers because my struts have recently gone bad. I'm a student so my budget is kinda tight. I've noticed tein type basics are relatively inexpensive and i was wondering if anyone had any opinions on them?

If you are going for a "cheap/inexpensive" coilovers, then dont because you will end up hurting yourself in the long run. If you are on a budget, stick with shocks and springs. Btw 10000s of threads on this.

Ah, I don't know why I thought I saw both Tein Flex and Basics in there.

I wouldn't necessarily say all lower end coilovers are garbage, though this does depend on how large of a range "lower end" allows for

Thanks for all the opinions. My budgets between 800 and 900. i was thinking going springs and shocks but i was recently given rims so i wanted the adjustability of coilovers mainly to make sure the back would clear and the front would sit flush. So you guys would say the basics arent worth it?

Megans... Good enough for the occasional track day, great for the street and Slamming if you dare or at least you will have no problems sitting flush. Dampening adjustments, and most importantly, within your budget.

honestly, you're probably better off with a good spring / strut combo.
Koni struts or Tokico D-Specs is what I would recommend.

The question is how long do you plan to keep your car? If you plan on keeping it until 100k or so then a good reliable shock/spring combo is your best bet. If you get cheap coilovers and the dampeners blow then you may have to spend that money all over again. If you get "good" coilovers then at least they can be rebuilt or you can replace the dampeners separately.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I was thinking of going with Koni's but i feel i may not get the stance in the front i want and the back may begin to rub causeing me to spend more money to roll the fenders. Megans sound like a good option, can anyone recommend a good site to get them from at a decent price?

Where are you located? I just picked up my megans...local shop charged me $850 out the door. I had to pay cash otherwise its a few bux more.. The place I got mines is racinglab.com in union city, ca.. Also rx7store sells then for an ok price.

^ I used to live in Union City, CA. What part of the Bay Area your from? That place your talking about is in Hayward, CA, just next door to Union City. Industrial blvd stretches from Union City thru Hayward. That area has a lot of warehouses, and it's by 880 freeway.

I've had the Tein Basics for 40k+ and they've been really good to me. Mountain drives, autocross, track days, they've done it all... I've done a lot of aggressive driving on them and still drive like they were new. Good shocks and springs are good too though. Just sharing my experiences with the Teins...

I live in san leandro currently.. Thanks for sharing your experience Jantzen, I was originally going to buy the basics, but after research found that the megans r more for ur buck...
Do any of u have megans?

Are you going to do the install by yourself? That's where you can save the most money.

I figured $200 is not worth paying for a shop to do it..plus most coilover manufacturers warranty r voided if u diy..

I have been going to a wheel works in the neighborhood for some time n given them lots of business..so it's a favor price..outside they want like $550..

Who installs them should not effect the warranty. I had a tokico go bad and had no warranty issues.

I believe book time is 4-5hrs or more. If they do it for less then $350 I would be surprised. You can come up to fairfield and I can knock it out for you in 4 hours with an alignment for $150. I will even put the car on scales for you.

That sounds like a great deal. The only issue is my schedule and the distance..i bought the lifetime alignment from firestone so its free..do u work for a shop or?

Thursday--saturday I'm usually free all day. I did years ago and I have had mine out 3 or 4 times and Installed a set of konis for a member once. I bought the alignment tools and scales because I track my car.

I have relatives near the San Leandro Bart Station, near the 880 / 580 merge.
