17 vs. 18
Searched for members cars with 17in compared to 18in wheels, with out to much luck. i am undecided on what size to get slash style to get? any help with info, advice, comments, pictures, anything would help. oh and i am buying rotas ha ha :naughty:
Just curious how an inch in dia. changes look of car of if it is even to noticeable? |
Ill try to be helpful, you probably wont find any direct comparison threads around. But it would probably help to know the style you want first. Then it would be easier to find a picture of that style wheel in both 17 and 18. Ohh and you can defiently notice the difference between 17 and 18, mostly because of the tires.

For me...18's. It's just the right size for the RX8. If it's smaller or bigger than the 18's, it looks awkward. It's up to you to decide. It's your dough :)

yeah thats what ive been thinking? thanks monchie, chino, and mush

On a lowered car, you can run something like a 255/40 or 245/40 on a 17" rim and get better gearing & lower weight/moment of inertia, both of which add up to better acceleration. You can feel it.
Actually, you can do this on a non-lowered car, but the gaps in the wheel wells will look stoopid. However, if you drop the car a bit (not too much because the tires will lower the car too, and you can quickly get into ground clearance issues) you can balance the look. |
I ordered my 17'' setup. Once the wheels get made and shipped to me in April, i will post pics.
Wheel specs are 17x9 +28 w/ 245/45/17 |
Dont buy Rotas they look like garbage. There are plenty of good looking quality wheels out there that wont break the bank. Rotas make me cringe.
My wheels. Lowered on Tein Basic. My car with 17x9.5 +38 (i think) Enkei NT03+M http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/2375/p1016469.jpg My car with 18x9 +28 Advan RS http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/7140/p1016113.jpg My car with 18x9.5 +45 Enkei RPF1 http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/2264/p1015007.jpg |
04rx, a lot of racers will go to a 17" wheel because of the reduction of weight. You can loose a couple of pounds of rotational mass which allows the car to accelerate faster. It is also a reduction in unsprung weight that can improve the ride on the street. When you move to a smaller diameter wheel you have to increase the tire diameter to keep the speedometer correct. You will need to work with tire diameter and section width to get something that works with the car.
Beyond that it's all what kind of look your going for. |

Hi all,
Changed from a size r17 to r18 wheels and shortly afterwards the abs, hand brake and dsc lights all come on after a few minutes of driving. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Reginald. |
This has nothing to do with the wheels themselves. My bet is that one of the wheel speed sensors got gummed up with schmoo or died.
|
Or the tires aren't the same size or wear and thr computer doesn't understand what you're doing to it.

Mrqng, what are your tire sizes? Same all around or did you go staggered. |

Thanks Notapreppie and Loki, as far as i know, it has same tyres all round, but i think one of them has a different speed rating, will double check later in the morning. I plugged in my abs scanner and it reads a fault with the steering angle sensor, wheels mismatch (all wheels have been refurbished). Regards Reg. |
Hi all, checked all my tyres, all are on 225 45 18, but 2 diagonal are on speed rating 95w xl, 1 is on 95y and the other on 95v. Is this enough to trigger the abs light?
Regards Reg. |
You may want to put it so that the front tires are the same and the rear tires are the same. The diagonal differences could cause problems like this. Not because of the speed rating, but they're obviously different models of tires, and perhaps of different age/wear?
|
In theory, if they're different tires, there could be differences in their effective overall diameters -- just enough to make the car notice and assume something's wrong.
Loki's idea is a good one. Are the two identical tires in comparable states of wear? If so, try putting them on the rear axle and the other two on the front. |
Abs & tyres
Hi all, i changed my front tyres to be same 95xl and the rear ones 95y, drove around, scanned with my abs scanner, boom!!! Abs lights are now off.
Thanks for the advice all. Regards Reg. |
