$130 For Factory Tire Pressure Cap?!!

Went to the dealer this am to pick up a replacement tire pressure cap. (Noticed one of mine was missing.) And, that thing is $130 a pop (sensor, vessel, cap) + a special order as well. (Generic ones I saw at Autozone didn't match the design and looked rather crappy compared to the factory ones.) Is that crazy expensive or what...

BigOLundh 05-02-2006 02:06 AM

What a rip off... i have some extra ones lying around if you like. My rayswheels came with new black ones so im not using these old ones.

you are talking about a cover... yea they all fit, a fool and his or her money...

beers

Detrich 05-02-2006 01:32 PM

Thanks for the offer Lundh :) I paid and ordered the replacement already though :( Guess I should've posted here b4 going to the dealer. I just never would have expected those little plastic things to cost so much. They come w/ the cap & nozzle I found out- because apparently they won't sell them separately. :Eyecrazy:

what?!

Are you talking about valve stem caps?

When I lost one of mine I found some neat "knurled aluminium" ones at autozone for $4. But yeah, a lot of the caps don't really match the wheels.

I took all four of mine off, after I woke up on two separate mornings to two different flat tires. It seems that they cause a slow leak.

Detrich 05-05-2006 12:17 AM

ouch! i guess i should find a temporary cap to cover it up in the meantime... are you a Tesla fan by any chance? noticed the Edison's Medicine avatar...

Deitrich, Just to double check... is what you need just the cap (pic 1), or the entire valve stem and cap (pic 2).
The second pic is the black RaysWheels stems.. i can't sell those. Sorry

I just wanted to make sure before you sent payment.

Detrich 05-05-2006 01:01 AM

I only need the cap. But, the one you have in the picture doesn't look like it matches the one I'm looking for. The factory ones are black plastic, have a flat top, and a ridged pattern. Did yours come w/ steel caps?

yiksing 05-05-2006 01:02 AM

If its the whole stem and cap I think its reasonable priced

Looks like we have different caps. Attached is a close up picture of mine. This is off of a 04 MT RX-8. I bought the car with only 3 miles on it, and it had been in the country less than week before i picked up... so i doubt anyway changed the caps. Then again... you never know.

I'll go ahead and reverse your paypal payment right now.

BigOLundh 05-05-2006 01:26 AM

Oh Cr*P!!! I just remembered when i got my wheels on, the people at discount tire noticed all my caps were missing (i take them off constantly to check my tire pressure... and lost them in the course of it). I'm sorry for the confusion, but these are not OEM caps. I completely forgot about this... damn alcohol

Detrich 05-05-2006 01:31 AM

yah, that's weird that our caps are different. mine's an '05 6MT that i picked up new also. i guess i'll go back to the dealer and look at some other 05's on their lot and see if their caps are the same as mine. i find it odd that they don't stock these like mad, since they probably get stolen a lot.

on a side-note, the aluminum ones that staticlag posted look pretty nice also... i guess it's not a bad idea to have some options, since i expect to lose more of these. maybe changing stem caps time to time is not a big deal. <lol>

thanks again for your help. and, let me know when you're going to be in town. will definitely try to make the meet. cheers!

swoope 05-05-2006 01:59 AM

detrich.

you are just looking for the stock black ones i think i have three if that helps...

beers

Detrich 05-05-2006 02:13 AM

yah, i'm looking to have some spares, 'cuz it sucks when u can't even park your car at work without them getting stolen... <sigh> <lol> if you don't need yours anymore, how much do you want for them? these are the factory black, plastic ones w/ the flat top and ridged pattern right? let me know... thanks!

swoope 05-05-2006 02:17 AM

yeh thats them...

let me go to the garage and see if i can find them.... give me a few..

beers

Detrich 05-05-2006 02:23 AM

okie... :)

swoope 05-05-2006 02:35 AM

ok i found them.

i have 3 stock ones and 2 that are close and will fit...

pm me your address and i will try to get them out by sat...

beers

Detrich 05-05-2006 02:40 AM

awesome. will do that right now. :)

CosmosMpower 05-07-2006 10:18 AM

Is it a fact that if you take the caps off the tires will slowly leak? Normally that doesn't seem to be the case on other cars but with this weird tire pressure monitoring system you never know. I noticed last night that my car only had 2, should I just some generic plastic ones from autozone?

Detrich 05-08-2006 03:44 AM

Cool, I'll check those out also. Thanks for the tip...

in theory, u shouldn't have to worry about a slow leak. however, to be on the safe side, i would put some generic ones on- only because, why deal w/ the hassle of a flat tire if it can be easily avoided? (i did)

Hey Static,

I picked up a set of these also... and YES they are VERY COOL!

Thanks for letting me know about them, 'cuz I prolly wouldn't have noticed them otherwise. They DO match the color of the stock RX-8 rims REALLY nicely. And, they were cheap, like you said: $4 per set w/ the kit. I bought 2 sets in case more caps get stolen.

Cheers!

itsallaboutgary 05-10-2006 06:45 PM

someone stole 2 of mine in my school parking LOT today. bastards =( if anyone else has spares, please PM me. lol!!

Detrich 05-10-2006 07:30 PM

u know what i found out recently- the spares that alhambra mazda ordered for me turned out to be the wrong ones. it turns out that stock vessel cap for the rx-8 is ONLY sold with the tire sensor & stem in a package. (i called around a couple dealerships, and apparently this is a consistent story.) and, they don't know which manufacturer supplies the caps to them.

as such, the sensor, stem, and cap = $130 approximately. so, aftermarkets are pretty much the way to go if u get your stock ones stolen.... unless u want to dish out $130 a pop.

the aluminum ones that static recommends look SWEET- even better than the stock ones, in my opinion. so, if u have stock wheels, check 'em out. they come in a tire pressure kit they sell at autozone for about $4. the kit comes w/ 2 sets of tire caps, a pressure monitor, and some other screws.

sorry to hear u got yours stolen too! i know how u feel.

epitrochoid 05-10-2006 11:06 PM

detrich...you driven an enzo lately? i know some people that want to talk to you lol

seriously, don't we all have a jar full of "chromies" that we boosted off cars when we were kids? put em to use!

GulfCoast 07-02-2006 01:00 AM

Have any of you ever obtained colored stem caps to match the color of your car? I don't remember seeing color-coded caps on other cars (not that I go around looking at stem caps), so I don't know how it would look. It would probably look silly, but I tend to have to see something to know.

mikeschaefer 07-02-2006 11:43 AM

a little piece of plastic isn't going to stop an air leak from a tire with 35+ psi in it, they are there to keep dirt and grime out of the valve stem

btw you can get 4 little black plastic caps at advance auto or autozone for about a dollar

if people constantly steal yours (which is kind of weird) then I would just get the black ones and nothing fancy
