My problem is solved ... a bad fuel pump. The compression was OK, so it wasn't the seals, but there was no fuel pressure. Still had to pay for it to be replaced at the dealer, as removing the fuel tank is a little beyond me.
Unfortunately your issue is probably not as simple (mine wouldn't start at all, but once the pump was replaced, everything runs fine ... better than before, actually, as I had replaced a bad coil as well). I wish you luck and let us know what they tell you beyond "blown motor".

I thought the fuel pump was accessible by removing the driver back seat bottom?
Glad your car is running. What was the thud?

Yup. Common problem. Rx8 fuel pump is weak. Bhr also makes an upgrade for this. There is a diy for this on the site with a little searching. Most folks don't see problems during daily driving. Come to think of it. If you want to get a feel for the weak points on the rx8 just check out the Bhr site and see what components they sell that they have developed.
