Components in circuit boards are now being connected with Lead-less Solder. Solder used to be close to a 50/50 mix of tin and lead. The lead is being taken out because of the effects on the body.
What does this mean? The tin component in the solder grows small hairs that can short out the circuits after a length of time. Many times, just a jarring blow can brake these filaments off. Sometimes not. This could be the cause of problems with these units.
In the future, also look for problems with the PCM, dashboard and other electronic components.
However, it could be something as simple a a bad ground connection.

Thank you Red...def keep me posted.

The dealer today told me that it's a plastic piece that comes apart in the back of that display and costs like 20 bucks for the part...

LOL... Yeah they $20 for the part and then rape you $250 for the labor... Idk if it's true, I'm just saying. I didn't tell them to do anything with that yet..I rather wait and get more info..I just told them to take care of the CEL for now.

this has happened to me 3 times. I am currently experiencing the same thing. You just have to take it to mazda and they'll fix it under warranty. I am waiting for my part to come in for mine

^Problem is it's out of warranty

Did they tell you what piece??

They told me it's some kind of plug in the back that's about $20.. but I can't imaging the cost of labor for that $20 part...

I think its the head unit for the cd player. Im pretty sure they have to put a whole cd player and display in. It is very aggravating cause this is the 3rd time i've had it fixed

well i think hot weather has something to do with it. It only happens when the inside of your car gets extremely hot. So from now on i leave my windows cracked so air can circulate.

^ I thought that too... but "last night" I was driving from a friends house and the majority of the time it did it until I was almost home and it corrected itself... and today no show (and it's HOT!)

Weird. It's driving me nuts!

scrambled LED Dash Display

When I started the car, the display started going NUTS. It was like FUZ on a TV - but worse. things would start and stop flashing at random - EVEN areas I've never seen before. Did you know there's a little 'fan' Icon, then a scale to the right of it, that shows your heater fan speed???

Anyone else have anything like this happen?

Happened to me in the middle of a really hot day (100+ degrees F) . The dealer said this is fairly common in 4 year olds and the factory has a rebuilt model for $175. I have to turn in my old one they say. The display is held in by two screws under the vents and it clips to the back of the radio. Found one on Ebay for $100! 15 minute install... screwdriver only needed.

Mine HU Dispaly just started to feak out too. -It stayed that way for a few days and was driving me crazy. So, I just decided to do the "firmware version" check and it cleared it. -Back to normal at least for now.

Yeah, the fist smash worked for about a month for me, but after a while it loses its effectiveness. I ended up replacing the CD player, which according to the dealer will fix it, and I haven't had a problem since, but I won't be convinced until it goes through another hot summer. The dealer charged me $158 for the replacement single disc CD player with installation FYI.
