Weird problem with Center Diplay - looks like alien language

When I started my car, after work, I noticed the clock read about 20 minutes fast....

"that's odd" I thought...

When I started the car, the display started going NUTS. It was like FUZ on a TV - but worse. things would start and stop flashing at random - EVEN areas I've never seen before. Did you know there's a little 'fan' Icon, then a scale to the right of it, that shows your heater fan speed???

Anyone else have anything like this happen?

I'd probably give the dealer - the one you trust - a call...see what they have to say.

That's for the non-US cars with automatic climate control. Those symbols are not used on the manual A/C-equipped US cars, but the display is the same in all RX-8s.

No.
Hope they didn't mess up something while installing your new system

But the display shouldn't know anything's changed...they took the speaker wires and ran them into the coverters, then to the amp. As far as the radio goes, it can't tell the difference.

I'll try to get it on video...

Why would they need to get to the radio/display? Is it fixed now? Mine acted up once since posting this - but went away after a few minutes.

they had to take it to the Stealership, they found the bent pin on the back of the head unit, not sure why they accessed it, but I got the installation of the amp and sub free so I aint complaining...free labor, sounds good

dug this thread up cause i had the same problem. a few things i noticed:

the radio worked fine while the display went crazy
the buttons for a/c worked, but didn't light up
it only seemed to happen when it was 80+ degrees in the car

the dealer couldn't figure out what was wrong, so they gave me a new display

Dude, Just had the same exact thing happen to my '04 8. I took it to the dealer and they said that the circuit board was cracked or something. So they had to order it from Cali and I'm waiting for them to recieve the part now. They said it's not a common problem with 8's, but i think its more common than they know.

It's NOT the display - at least it wasn't in my car's case. It was the whole 'radio'. The parts guy ordered a 'display'; only when the radio unit was replaced was the problem fixed. Good luck y'all!

Have them order a new radio unit. If I can find my paperwork I'll send you whatever you need to get them to fix the 'right' part.

Good luck!

Happened to me too!

My radio got quieter and all the lights came on. There's a lot more on there than the fan speed that we don't have!

the dealer replaced the whole radio because the face plate got messed up. then when i went to pick it up i noticed the plastic piece near the passengers knee area had the tabs misaligned. took it back and they said the tabs were broken. they ordered me a new one and put it in last week. then this week the flashing lights.

anyone still think its the head unit? or did they screw up more than just breaking the tabs?

This happened to me too. I haven't taken it in to get fixed yet however. I'm afraid since I installed the PIE adapter they are going to tell me its my fault and not warrantied...

Heres a video I took when it started going nuts:

STILL dealing with this issue now. I've had the head unit and the radio replaced about 6 times now. Mazda tech doesn't even know the answer. A fellow EVOLV-Chicago member had the same problem and he said they replaced the radio motherboard with a 2006 model and he hasn't had any problems since.

My dealer is calling his to see what the final solution was. I'll keep you posted on what I find out.
