Weird Noise...louder with intake
Hey guys I have this weird noise coming from my engine. It kind of sounds like a grinding noise but I just cant tell. It is noticeable but not loud when I have the stock intake in and then 100x's louder when the KN intake is on. It is only under hard acceleration and only after the engine gets warmed up. In the morning this noise doesnt happen until about 5 minutes later when the engine is warm. I cleaned my air filter, checked my oil, engine doesnt overheat, Ive driven over 90 miles 3 saturdays in a row with no problems. Also when i am just crusing on the highway the engine sounds fine. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks.
From the searching ive done it sounds like a bad cat??? but what does everyone else think. Thanks

Hmm...
How many mi on your engine, has it done this since the beginning (that you remember) or has it gotten progressively worse?
What type of gas do you use, does it sound like a rotary 'pinging'?
The sound of the engine sucking air would get louder with the K&N, quite a bit louder... that is normal.
Sorry I can't be more help...

I have 35,000 miles, i guess you could say its a pinging, its hard to tell, I use 93 octane. It didnt do it when I first got the car. Then it started then it went away for ahwhile, and now its back. Like i said its a lot more noticeable with the intake. I dont know if the dealership will do anything except say use good gas from what ive heard from everyone else.

Have you had the latest flash on your pcm. Because my car use to do that. When I installed my typhoon intake, it would start grinding wheneverI would take it over 5000 rpms. I would put the factory intake back on then take it to the dealership but they could never duplicate the sound, they would tell me to make sure that I am using 91 octane. I then took it to miller mazda in waco and it started grinding on the test drive. They sent the pcm to california to be reflashed and when I got it back it never did it again.

That sounds exactly like my problem. I have the typhoon as well, grinds over 5000. I am using premium gas however. I believe I have the latest flash though, I was just at the dealsership not too long ago. I'll bring it back though and let them check it out. Thanks.
