Vibration while driving.

Ok guys. I have this vibration/noise coming from what seems to be the rear of the car while driving. The vibration increases in frequency when going at a faster speed. It seems to go away when accelerating but when coasting down or at a constant speed it vibrates the whole car. When im coming to a stop the noise seems to get a little louder too as the frequency decreases. I took a look underneath the car but nothing visible that i could see. Any ideas? im taking it to the dealer this weekend. Im thinking a rotor or brake issue? or an axle maybe?

Maybe a wheel bearing, bent axle, damaged wheel, or extremely un balanced wheel.

Does it come and go away if you drive a slalom?

Did you hit any large pot holes and damage the wheel or axle?

Whens the last time you had your wheel balance checked?

What are the condition and age of your tires? Could be a bad tire(s), or tire(s) with strange wear due to misalignment...scollaping will make terrible tire noises.

I'd just take it somewhere to have your tires and alignment checked. Could definitely be one of those... And if it isn't one of those and is a bearing or something, there is a good chance that a reputable shop would spot it while checking the other stuff. Hard to say without actually seeing it.

I definitely got brand new tires like 3 months ago. so i dont think itll be that. and as for alignment, it makes noise even at very slow speeds, like 1-2 mph. i dont know.. its gonna sit in the garage for the next few days and im gona hop a ride from my roommate. then baby it to the shop. Think a little snow and cold weather would cause anything to go wrong?

I think you have a bearing failure. But until I can hear it or get more info I personally can't help you.

When did the noise start?
What kind of sound is it?
What kind of tires did you put on?
Is it possibly the sound of salt crunching under your tires?
Is it high or low pitched?
Is it constant or pulsating?
Does it go away if you turn left and right down the road in an S shape?
Did you get an alignment after you put tires on?
Is a tire rubbing a wheel well?
Is the vehicle sitting even front to rear and side to side?

When did the noise start?
- About a week and a half ago. but it was just a popping noise then. I had a passenger 2 days ago now and it got worse to a vibration/grindingish sound/feel.

What kind of sound is it?
- Like a loud knocking/grinding

What kind of tires did you put on?
- goodyear f1 all terrains. $210 a pop >.<

Is it possibly the sound of salt crunching under your tires?
- no. it vibrates the whole vehicle.

Is it high or low pitched?
- Its not like a piercing noise. Kinda sounds like an airbrake from a semi, just quieter

Is it constant or pulsating?
- Pulsating, with an increasing frequency the faster the car is going.

Does it go away if you turn left and right down the road in an S shape?
- Nope

Did you get an alignment after you put tires on?
- Yes

Is a tire rubbing a wheel well?
- Not from what i can see

Is the vehicle sitting even front to rear and side to side?
- It looks like it to me.

Im taking it to the shop on friday so... If no one can tell from that, ill let you guys know when they tell me whats going on.

Have you checked all your tires for a nail or piece of debris in them?

Yeah but I dont think that a nail or something like that would cause a loud noise and a vibration though.

If it's sticking our enough, it can make one hell of a rattle and rumble! I'm talking from experience

Well, shop called yesterday (was bed ridden sick yesterday, sorry!) but they said it was just a loose rim. I'm going to get the car tomorrow, theyre doing some other things i wanted done just never goat around to doing. So when I get the car back and can actually "test" it myself, lol, Ill let you all know if that was really it. They said the noise went away, but i bet they really didnt give it a good go for its money.

Ok. So got the car back today, got it up above 100 on the way home. No noise, no vibration. me = 1 happy camper. lol. I definitely missed my 8 though. We had some fun on the way home; in the snow... heh heh. xD

But this just goes out there: check your lugnuts every now and again so you dont waste $100 for the shop to tell you the same thing!

I recommend you buy a couple things. First is a 4 way breaker bar with a 21mm end. It will look like a + sign. Second is a torque wrench. Third is a 21mm socket. Fourth is a 1/4 inch drive extension thats only about 2 inches in length.

When you get the car home. Loosen the all 5 lugs just a hair. Each one that gets loosened gets tightened to 102lbs. Do one at a time until all them are on properly.

Mazda had a recall that the torque they suggested for the car wasn't enough and it should be 110. I have been running 102 for multiple track sessions no problems.

I recently had the same problem, once i hit 60-65mph id notice extreme vibrations from the steering wheel and gas pedal. I thought the auto shot messed something up...note to self: always balance your tires after rotating them especially if they're low profile.

You can eliminate the axle/cv joint if you dont hear a clicking noise when you turn.
