Trunk Light Dead Battery

ok, so i didn't know that i forgot to slam my trunk all the way 'til it was completely closed. and, one week later when i go to check on her, my battery was bone dead...

so, i guess the trunk light stays on even if the trunk is closed. <LOL> i know it was my fault, but that has got to be the dumbest design flaw- since it can potentially strand people.

so anyways. called mazda, got a AAA jump, and then experienced a bunch of dead battery things which were easily fixed:

1. DSC light flashing - Fix was to turn steering wheel all the way right, then all the way left.
2. DSC LED on- Fix was to cut ignition after driving around for 30 minutes to charge the battery. (The LED no longer comes on after the restart.)
3. Clock/ radio presets all lost - Big pain, but no biggie.

All my nav history & settings were still there though. anyhoo. just felt like i needed to share this little mishap. thanks for listening.

To make sure it doesn't happen again remove the bulb. If you have the spare tire, the light is essentially useless anyway. Or, for a more elegant solution, install the LED indicator light as detailed in one of the older DIY posts

7 Yr kick, but this topic is the closest to my problem I could find...

Battery drains, turns out the trunk light stays on -but- the trunk is closed, and the trunk light switch is not faulty. Measured continuity and it was all good. Trunk light just doesn't goes out when I press the switch...

Any ideas?

Something with the keyless entry system perhaps?

the trunk won't lift manually? most people can't tell if it is open/ajar because it still sits flush when you pop it.

if it is fully closed and the light is still on then either the switch is faulty or needs to be adjusted.

Trunk is closed, light is on, but the switch checked out ok (measured it with multimeter)

I suspect something with the Keyless Entry Module, because it is connected to the trunk light and the switch....

i would take it to the dealer so they can check and possibly reflash the BCM(body control module, it is what controls most of the interior/exterior lighting functions).

it could also be as simple as a wire shorting out in the trunk, IF the lights have constant power and the ground circuit is supplied by the module. but i haven't dug into it that far to know for sure if that is how the interior lighting works on the 8.

Well shoot me...

I removed the battery to charge it, and after charging the voltage dropped to 10,8V. So I killed the battery. Well no big deal, was planning on getting a new one anyways.

So I got a new battery today, installed it, and checked the trunk light...

Turns out it went off now with the trunk closed.

So my guess is the BCM (same as Keyless Entry Module I think... the little box under the glove compartment) was the problem, and it has reset.

Strange stuff, but I'm glad it's fixed (for now.... I'm gonna keep an eye on that trunk light, lol)

:D

Yea, all it takes is one time to get bitten by that trunk light, then you find yourself double checking to make sure it's closed.
