trouble starting, blinking check engine light

hello, i am a possible rx8 owner. im looking at one from a junk yard that has minor cosmetic damage. however when i went today to start it up and make sure it ran, it cranked for awhile bout 45sec and finally started, when it started it was a really ruff idle. it was blowing white smoke out the tail pipes that smelled like gas, naturally unburnt fuel. then i noticed that the check engine light was blinking. when i tryed to move it, it was very hesitant to move. now i dont know much about these car but i know that have a coil pack issue and spark plug issue. so with this little information is there anything you guys out there could tell me to point me in the right direction on wether this is a good buy or not. i would like to do a compression check to make sure there isnt significant engine wear, but i dont know how so that is another question i am looking to get answered, i realize that all of this has prop been discussed else were on this forum so please excuse me if this is a double post.

p.s. its a 2004 blue rx8 with 59000 miles for 6900 and to fix the cosmetic damage i will need a drivers side fender and a bumper cover.

Thanks for any and all replys!!!!

Cranked it for 45 seconds?

It's done. That killed any compression it had.

Don't give up, for sure. The RX-8 is incredibly fun to drive.

Just don't crank the next one for 45 seconds and don't buy one that anyone has cranked for that long!

Crank for maybe five seconds at a time, max. And maybe 3-4 times total. If it won't start it needs a little love.
