Question Tranny issues... grinds in 2nd when up & down shifting, no other gears have problem.

So this is my first 8, and dont know enough about trannys or even the rotary for that matter but when im getting on it from a dig and try to slam second it grinds something nasty, even when taking off slower if im going faster than 22mph it grinds like no other. also when im downshifting to come to a stop i cant get into second unless going less than 29 mph. any ideas/ solutions would be much appreciated. its an 05' m/t with 28k. i drive mostly hwy.

90% chance some dbag with 27,000 posts tells you to search for it and quit wasting everyones time....however

I have what seems to be the initial phase of what is happening to you, my second gear tends to stick unless im going real slow, its a bit clunky going in. Ive known a few people to have the same issue and it turned out to be the synchro. good luck

is this your first mt? why are you slamming gears? sounds like a syncro (very common). you could try better trans fluid but the damage is most likely done. btw next time please use the search function before starting a new thread on an old topic.

well dre, i got ya but i did answer his question first. alltho i dont have 27000 posts

rev matching could help or as i said, change fluid. you will most likely need a syncro or new trans.

A lot of $$$$.... Soo much that it was cheaper for me to buy another transmission than repairing my old one. But you can get a cheap used series 1 tranny for anywhere between $500-1,000. I went with the series 2 gearbox instead, more money but it's newer and more reliable.

Get redline mt90, I had this issue and tried several fluids, did this and the grind is no more. It may not work for you but it did for me.

^ What he said. Redline MT-90, proven over and over again to work well, and yes, tranny fluid makes a huge difference in these cars.
