Timing problems??????

Hi Guys,

Good group of people on here, thank so much so far!!
Need some more inout if any would could offer some advice.

05 plate 2.6L RX8. 92K miles, owned for 4K miles.

Started car, drive 50m, engine light came on, rough engine.
Got it back home the 50m and diagnosed as miss fire on 'cylinder 2' p0302 error code

Replaced spark plugs and wires that run from plugs to coils.

Car reluctantly fired and idled at about 850rpm, engine light gone away, but was rough.
little throttle but teased it up to high revs just once,
lots of smoke ~(expected as I had to do de flood procedure)
Engine light flashing when throttle teased up and stays flashing. (FYI sounds off as well, kin a a very deep induction noise)
Doesnt flash on initial start up but only barely idles.

Am thinking because of miss fire timing is now out.
Coils possibly as well?
Possibly even air fuel mix distrupted or somthing?

Thank you kindly:

Definitely coils
Clean ESS
Reset nvram with 20 brake stomp procedure

And seeing how you just bought it... I hoping you got a compression test performed?

Also its a 1.3 not a 2.6
That's the UK insurance companies screwing you.

Have done coils on secondary rotar (couldnt afford full set, seen as this was were fault was diagnosed, also I assume that I can swap the coils around if a coil from fron rotor has gone untill i can get another 2 coils)

Have done 20 break stomp sucessfully, oil pressure swept.

Struggling to find the ESS.

I like your confidence its the coils. Thanks for reasurance. I dare not start it with out jump from my freind.

Also any damage from blown coil / plug / lead should be at aminimum, as soon as It happened (about 50m from my house) i drove straight back v slowly. So hope full no damage, or blown cat???

Anythin else I should be considering at this point?

My car is 2005 US, and it did about the same a few weeks ago. I am running a rebuilt engine with 100 miles on it. Mazdamaniac tune(codes turned off).

It was running fine. I crank it up from cold and it is rough as ****. It felt like a piston engine with a stuck valve or thrown rod. I thought I had broke a apex seal. It sounded like it was just headers. It would not rev and had no power at all. The cat was bright red, after 30 seconds of idling. Smoking and smelled horriable fom the tail pipe. So I drove it and kept it in first as high rpm as it would go abt 3500. A miniute later I heard all sorts of noise and it smoothed out, the noise droped and I have plenty of power. I think my Cat came apart.

HI all,

thanks for all your input. I replaced coils on second rotar and she purss now.
Just got the other two coils to chnge out on first rotor in about an hour or so.

Engine light is still on, but you guys on here says, need possibly up to 10x normal driving runs for ECU to recognise fault cleared. If this doesnt go by end of weekend ill have my mobile guy come out and plug her back and in check codes again and clear them.
I have been around everything else and all is good.
She has little more 'power', better throttle responce and idles very nicely.

This weekend am going to do oil and filter. Dipped it yesteerday and oil was on lower limit so topped it up.
Checked oil today and a small amount of white was apparent. If normal engine id say head gasket on its way, or could it be cause I topped it up?
Either way she will benafit from a full change out, and I guess at this point ill know what that is.

Just wanted to say thanks for everything and any more comments please drop me a line on here.

Thank you gents very kindly

That's awesome man thanks for the update.

You should get that engine light checked just to make sure there isn't anything else.

Otherwise (and I've not had to do this)

I hear if you disconnect the battery for 20 minutes or so that it will clear the CEL ... but you won't be able to read it later if you want to.

This is just what I've read...

its true, i think its faster than that, if you push the brake pedal. its true you won't know what the code was, but if it doesn't come back it was just making sure you still care
