Over the weekend i went to my dealer for an oil change. The service dept. guy said that I was due to have my throttle body cleaned. He stated that carbon build up would occur over time, in the throttle body, and cause idle and acceleration problems. Any thoughts on this matter?? I haven't heard of anyone having this service done.

 

IMO : bottom line, if its not called for in the service manual, its not needed.....

Sure if there is enough build up it 'could' cause an idle problem, ect...but not much of a diff. I wouldnt get it done, its just like my dealer telling me I need their fuel injection system cleaning/service every time I get an oil change.....wtf. If you run good gas and change your oil/filter, air filter and fuel filter often its not a prob...again IMO.

 

I agree, I don't think it's nessexxary . I've seen the doohicky thing behind the pastic thingie on my car at like 20k and it wasn'd all gooed up.

 

right on guys! That's what I figured....the stealership just trying to do its thing. Oh well, I guess you can't blame them for trying. Thanks for the heads up.

 

with my last car, 03 celica, i used seafoam to clean it out. poured the seafoam down one of the tubes in the body. worked well

 

I picked my 8 up from the dealership after having a new water pump installed (had unexplained coolant loss). As we were discussing general maintenance issues concerning the 8, he mentioned the rotary in particular is prone to carbon build-up, and recommended adding Techron Fuel System Additive at the same interval as oil changes. I told him my remedy was to rev it high at least once a day to keep the combustion chambers clean, to which he smiled approvingly.

He went on to recommend Throttle Body Cleaning to help the engine work more effeciently. Something about liguifying the carbon with a type of spray cleaner which is then vaporized during combustion.

Sounds like our service writers read the same ECSB (Extra Cost Service Bulliten)!
