Surging idle

Just thought I would post a problem I had earlier this summer. When the engine was cold, my idle would surge from 850-1500 rpms. The weird thing was the problem would go away by pushing in the clutch. The mechanic finally figured out it was the white nuetral safety switch that plugs into the transmission

I hope someone can benefit from this info

I think I may be having the same problem, It was the coldest day today where I am and when I went to go warm my car up I had the same problem you did my RPM's were jumping from 1.5 to 3 but as long as I had the clutch held in it was fine. Do you remember how much the repair cost you?

really weird I think I had the same problem this morning, its -20 degrees celcius here in ontario today, coldest day yet this year

I started my car, it idled fine for about 10 seconds then the rpm started to flucuate between 3000 and 1500, up and down it wouldn't stop, i wasnt paying attention to if the clutch was pressed or not. I let it idle that way for 1 minute and nothing was changing, I then pressed on the gas and brought the rpm to 3500 and it was smooth staying at that rpm, after keeping it there for 15 seconds and letting go of the gas pedal it started to idle fine without flucuation.

So did replacing the nuetral safety switch fix the problem for you TANKERG?

Anybody else have this problem and figure out the exact cause?

I've owned my rx8 for 1 month now, and I love it and this is the first problem it has showed

It fixed the problem and I think it was around $200 with labor included.

Do you have the part number? This is a problem I have had since I bought the car, but I don't want to pay Mazda to fix. Mine is intermittent regardless of whether or not the car is hot or cold. It will appear and disappear in the same idle, and may start or stop in the same trip out. It always goes away when I push in the clutch pedal.
