Sunroof vibrates as it opens

Hi guys,

My sunroof vibrates as it opens up. It doesn't vibrate through out the entire opening proccess. It only vibrates near the beginning and again near the end of the track. I tried WD40 and also some type of lube. Neither helped. I checked and found nothing loose. The sunroof is fine when closed, this vibration only happens as it opens up completely.

Anyone experienced the same?

Anyone got any tips? Or perhaps suggest a better section for this enquiry?

wd40 and "some type of lube" <wince>

clean out the track using shop rags and qtips. check for any debris near the rollers. I believe it uses some type of white lubricant from the factory.

You can also check the motor itself, here's a guide to get to it http://home.comcast.net/~c_wrzesniewski/sunroofmod.htm

here's the thread that link is from: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-interior-audio-electronics-24/remote-sunroof-help-22414/

"Some type of lube" was referring to this lithium-based grease. Tried that, didn't work. Found a can of WD-40 a week later. Tried that, didn't work.

I've cleaned the tracks the best I could given the terrible access blocked by the glass and the rolling mechanism. Is there a guide to take apart the glass portion of the sunroof?

It is a known problem - the drive cables stretch with age and allow the glass to be pulled with slightly uneven force, causing it to "stutter" as it opens.
There is a TSB for sunroof noise, unfortunately it requires removal and replacement of the entire guide mechanism.
The best way for the owner to address it is to remove the glass pane and clean the track and lubricate it, along with the guides and guide pins.
It will stutter again in a few months to a year, though.

Thanks for the insight. This explains why the stuttering only happens when opening the sunroof (not when closing).

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but has anyone found a resolution to this instead of replacing it? I was hoping greasing would work, but hasn't.

Sunroof shutter

Sounds like (pun intended) something you have to just live with. Mine just started now, as long as it’s functional I’m sure ok with the shutter. Basically start the car, before opening sunroof- find an awesome tune, crank it, and then open the sunroof. If a tree falls in the forest and you’re weary by ear buds cranked to 11 does it really make a sound?
