Sunroof Question

A few weeks ago I had the bright idea to regrease my sunroof tracks because 1) they are extremely dirty and 2) the sunroof would sort of stutter once it got to about 3/4 of the way retracted and did the same thing in the same section on the way to close. It would also make a clicking noise like a part was loose while I was idling. I could stop this noise by stabilizing the sunroof with my hand.

So I regreased the track and rubber seal around the sunroof window. It worked wonderfully for a few days, though still seemed to stutter in the same section but a little less. Then I tried to open it one day and it didn't open. The motor would try but it was stuck. I can get it open by applying additional pressure with my hand to open it.

From my assessment, I either used the wrong grease or hurt the rubber binding of the sunroof window to where it sticks to the car frame and the motor is not strong enough to break the seal without additional pressure.

Does anyone have any thoughts of what to do? I tried to look for that rubber binding to replace it but I have not been able to find a part number or anything.

The type of grease I used was: Coastal All-Purpose EP Grease

Thanks!

You should have used lithium grease. But it could be a couple of things, like the cable, etc. You will have to disassemble it and find out.

I'd wager your Mazda dealer could fix it back to the way it worked when new in about an hour.

Or... you could spend a few weeks reading replies, trying things that may not work, or work for a little while, or sorta, kinda work better than how it is now. Who knows, maybe you'll even fix it good as new.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. But I don't think anything is wrong with the sunroof motor. I think the rubber around the sunroof is old and when I initally took the grease off of it and reapplied new grease, I think it ruined it.

So I guess my real question is, does anybody have a part number for that? Is it going to be outrageously expensive like everything else on this car? lol

Also, I applied some lithium grease after the fact, it helped for a little bit then went back to the way it was before after about a day or so. Maybe I'll just add more lithium grease again.

Part# 69-895 is the weatherstrip (From memory I think the glass sits inside this.)
Part# 68-915 is the welt seam (underneath the glass)

Hope that helps, I have the same issue; however, I am going to try and get it looked at under warranty if possible...

A little update. I applied some white lithium grease and it worked wonderfully for a day. Then it dried and its even harder to open than before (I help push it open with my hand). I really think I don't need to replace the rubber strip, just find a good grease to use. Anyone have any suggestions for grease?

I live in San Angelo, TX so it is extremely dry here and already starting to warm up. I don't know how the environmental conditions will effect the grease. I had assumed it wouldn't.

Odd...did you use spray on grease?

I tried this last year on mine, couldn't solve the issue myself...I used spray on grease. I'll just bring her to the dealer when I take her out in spring.

White Lithium grease shouldn't do that, however as an aerosol it might not leave enough actual grease...

use Lithium grease in a can that you have to apply it with your fingers,

do NOT use any kind of spray bullshit. those does NOT work.

or use any kind of Synthetic Grease, the kind that does not dry out.
